In our Sustainability Trends for Business 2024, we unpack the many elements that will influence corporate priorities on climate change as well as wider sustainability goals for businesses and their capital providers. For businesses based in the EU and UK a tsunami of legislation will dictate the priorities across Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues with climate change and alignment to a 1.5degC future the goal. At the global level, slow progress on climate change policy, as evidenced by COP28, major elections in over 40 countries including the USA, and geopolitical instabilities will make for a turbulent year. Only one in five European companies is making the kind of substantive changes necessary to move to a greener business model, even as more than half report having climate transition plans in place. Oliver Wyman's new report with CDP Europe identifies five factors of business model change needed to close the implementation gap and drive the green transition. Of the five we’ve analyzed, access to capital is especially a key concern. As a result, a majority of European companies spend less than a quarter of capital expenditures on green initiatives. In my role servicing clients in Belgium and Luxemburg, I like to show that we have the brains behind the gains. At this year’s CDP Europe Awards, our partner Jennifer Tsim presented insights from our latest report with CDP Europe on how we can get the money moving and unlock the business model change needed to deliver the climate transition. We found that only one in five European companies have made substantial progress in implementing their transition plans, with over a third of companies (and over a half in carbon-intensive sectors) citing access to capital as a key concern when it comes to implementing their transition plans.
