Congratulations to Jefferson County, Colorado Open Space for making exciting progress on the Clear Creek Canyon Trail! 🚵♀️ If you caught last Friday’s cover story in The Denver Post, you’ve seen that the County is moving forward with efforts to complete the next phase of construction—another three-mile segment west of Golden—of the multi-use trailway along Clear Creek and U.S. Route 6. The full #ClearCreekCanyonTrail is part of a 65-mile trail system that, once completed, will connect Loveland Pass to Adams County. CDR’s Laura Hickey, Audrey Clavijo, and Melissa Bade have supported municipalities and partners across the corridor in Adams, Denver, Jefferson, Clear Creek Counties to coordinate resources and planning efforts. Construction over the next two years will include paved and wheelchair-accessible trails, over- and underpasses, parking, restrooms, and trailheads, providing greater recreational amenities as well as improved traffic safety. Here's a bird's eye view of the progress made on our Roath Park Cycleway scheme for Cardiff Council. Significant improvements have been made around the Pen-Y-Lan Library and Community Centre, including the installation of an attenuation tank for better drainage, upgrades to surface water systems, and enhancements to the road leading into the library car park. The entrance to the car park now incorporates two-way traffic flow, making it more accessible. The formation of the new shared-use cycleway on the recreation ground between the library and Alder Road is complete. This area now features new street light infrastructure and a drainage system, enhancing safety and usability for cyclists and pedestrians alike. In Pen Y Wain Place, we’ve focused on enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety with major improvements. These include junction regeneration, footpath widening, new crossings, and paving slab renewal. Additionally, a new buildout at the bus stop has been installed to improve accessibility. The kerb has been realigned at the Ninian Road/Wellfield Road Junction, and tactile paving for the new crossing's layout has been installed. We have also renewed traffic signal ducting and drainage, completing the first phase of the junction realignment. Communication ducting along Wellfield Road has been installed, enabling better connectivity in the area and facilitating a wider infrastructure upgrade. This ducting will continue up Pen-Y-Lan Road, further extending these improvements. On Ty Draw Road, the removal of existing traffic calming measures is ongoing. Once removal is complete, new measures, including a raised table, will be installed to improve pedestrian crossing and maintain traffic calming effects. Tree maintenance within the park has been successfully completed. This involved tasks such as limb removal, pruning, crown lifting, and hazardous tree clearing, all overseen by an arborist to ensure the long-term health of the trees and the safety of the park. #TeamKB #Cardiff #Civilengineers #Construction #Publicrealm #Infrastructure

In response to the growing demand for smaller lot sizes, our client Sunbury Hills Pty Ltd requested additional lots within the Everley development. We accommodate such requests promptly due to our efficient systems and processes, however limitations arise when dealing with narrow nature strips that contain services, street trees, and vehicle crossovers. In such situations, Taylors offer solutions that maintain our desired outcomes without compromising the aforementioned. Here is an illustrative example: Initially, the pod layout featured four lots. Our client requested an extra lot, as shown in the middle image. However, strict requirements for pram crossings, vehicle crossovers, parking bays, and drainage pits made this impossible. To address this, we strategically realigned the lots, ensuring compliance with critical standards (as depicted in the right-hand image). #TeamTaylors #CivilEngineering #Engineering #AgileDesign #EverleyEstate #SunburyHills #UrbanDevelopment #ResidentialDevelopment #HousingDevelopment #Expertise #Solutions

A nod to the past, present and future provided the backdrop during the dedication of our new bridge over the South Yamhill River from OR 18 to Three Mile Lane in McMinnville. Project staff, construction crews and county leaders gathered yesterday to thank the community for their patience and support following three years of work to replace the original 1951 wooden bridge structure with its new steel and concrete span. Originally 35 feet wide, the 48 foot widened bridge can now better safely accommodate commercial traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge is a vital link between McMinnville and OR 18 southeast of the city that carries an average 16,000 vehicles per day, along with growing use by people walking and biking. Because this is a busy route, we built a temporary bridge to carry traffic before demolishing the original bridge. This also feeds into one of the most common questions we’ve heard on this project - why is construction three years? The answer is the project team built three bridges and we removed three bridges. A complete detour was built on the west side to get traffic off the alignment so we could demo the original bridge, and then they built a complete work bridge structure on the east side that was stout enough to support all the cranes and equipment. The new bridge was ready for traffic last fall, but after this year’s removal of the detour and construction bridges, the last step in the project is restoration of the riverbank, including seeding. That work has begun, and landscape work will likely continue into early next year.

Before 1930, US 99, which incorporated the Ridge Route, followed the general route of Sierra Highway to its intersection with the "northern" San Fernando Road. Today, it is difficult imagine how these mountains were a major barrier to road construction, but it is important to bear in mind how significantly the construction of the two freeways altered them. Building a road which would provide more direct routing for US 99 was not possible until the late 1920s, when both road building technology and funding had sufficiently advanced to permit it. The Weldon Canyon bypass (officially known as the "Newhall Alternate"), which is now covered by I-5, was completed in 1930 and offered a substantial saving of time as well as increasing safety. Until its widening in 1951, this road was three lanes, with the suicide lane in the middle. North of the US 6 interchange, US 99 entered Weldon Canyon. Weldon Canyon is a stark contrast to the barren mountains that surround it and even though much of it has been paved over by present I-5, the lush vegetation that dotted its hillsides is still visible. Before 1928, this was a steep canyon, filled with vegetation reminiscent of someplace in the Pacific Northwest. The first road to cross it was only three lanes wide and hugged the western wall. It was widened into a four lane divided highway by 1953, but generally followed the previous alignment, which was engineered well enough to be incorporated into the newer highway. In fact, much of the widening work done in the 1940s and 1950s used the older alignments as half of the divided and widened road. The section between the I-5/SR-14 interchange and Lyons Ave was one of the last sections of US 99 to be replaced by I-5, having been bypassed between 1967 and 1972. Much of this highway still exists and is known today as The Old Road. Ridge Route history by Jerry Reynolds: Ever since the days of Phineas Banning, General Beale and the Butterfield Overland stage, vehicles made their way out of Los Angeles, through San Francisquito Canyon, down the Grapevine Pass, and then into Bakersfield. The California Highway Commission was formed in 1911, and one of its first priorities was to build a simpler, more direct road through the La Liebre Mountains. That task fell to the man with the unlikely name of W. Lewis Clark. Frustrated in several attempts to locate an easy way across the stony barrier, Clark, at last, blazed a trail right over the top from the mouth of Castaic Canyon to Gorman. It was called the Ridge Route. After a year of toil, during which four-horse Fresno scrapers graded hilltops alongside chugging Caterpillar tractors to the tune of a staggering half-million dollars, the Tejon Route, as it was originally dubbed, opened to the motoring public late in November 1915. The Auto Club did a little calculating, finding that in the 36 miles between Castaic and Gorman, there were 642 curves that added up to 97 complete circles. It did cut 60 miles off the road.
