The UK's Green Renewal: A Positive Step Forward for UK Sustainability! The past few weeks have seen significant developments in the UK government's sustainability agenda. Ed Miliband - architect of the UK #ClimateChangeAct 2008 - returns as Secretary of State for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero which signals a renewed focus on achieving clean energy by 2030 and a renewed desire for UK #sustainability leadership. Here are some key initiatives announced over the past fortnight: • #MissionControl: Led by Chris Stark (previously CEO of the Climate Change Committee, established under the Climate Change Act 2008), this initiative aims to turbocharge the government’s mission to provide Britain with cheaper and clean power by 2030. • #OnshoreWind & #Solar Initiatives: The lifting of the onshore wind ban, coupled with the launch of an Onshore Wind Industry Taskforce and a revamped Solar Taskforce, along with expected roadmaps, signifies a multi-pronged approach to renewable energy. • #GreatBritishEnergy Bill: This bill proposes a publicly owned energy company to invest in renewable projects, particularly offshore wind, promoting energy security, lower bills, and climate action. • #Planning and #Infrastructure Bill: This bill expedites the development of sustainable infrastructure, benefiting both the environment and the economy. • #NationalWealthFund Bill: This bill seeks to establish a National Wealth Fund that would direct investments towards clean energy, fostering innovation and economic growth. • #SustainableAviationFuel Bill: This bill supports the development of cleaner aviation fuels for a more sustainable aviation industry. • #WaterBill: This bill empowers regulators and incentivises water companies to prioritise environmental protection in water management. • Fossil Fuel Review: The government's review and possible reversal of recently issued coal and oil licenses demonstrates its commitment to a clean energy future. "New Energies = New Opportunities" And New Government Starting the day with the Labour Party winning the election and Sir Keir Starmer has been handed the keys to Downing Street. With the magical winning word ‘CHANGE’, the focus should be on the trio towards development and change Energy transition + Digital transformation + skills of the future. For energy transition, the party must now prove it is ready to deliver on and fully invest in the energy transition A call for a national energy transition strategy, a call for serious climate actions and pushing to work collaboratively to attract green investors to help deliver a sustainable future. The private sector should lead the change!

Investment in carbon-capture should be a priority! We knew that REs alone will not be able to win the race! Perhaps the most problematic part of the transition situation right now is that there is little that governments can do to turn things around. They can certainly ease permitting regulations to enable more wind and solar construction—until opposition from local communities begins mounting, and it will because these installations will be encroaching on farmland. They can certainly keep subsidizing EV makers, but only up to a point. Some, such as Germany, have already reached that point, and subsidies are being axed just like guaranteed minimum electricity prices. Subsidizing loss-making enterprises can only last a while, but not forever.

Since joining PA, one of the things that stands out most to me is just how many amazing, insightful, thought-provoking colleagues there are around me, all striving for a more positive human future. More money into ClimateTech??!! 🤑 🤑 At last year's Climate Salad Festival, Sophie Purdom from Sightline Climate (CTVC) highlighted the positive correlation between America's '$3.5T climate triple whammy' of public policy (led by the $370B Inflation Reduction Act) and the substantial growth of ClimateTech innovation in the country. 🌿 Can and will Australia do the same? 🇦🇺 The federal government has signalled its intention to emulate America's efforts to drive the domestic development of climate technologies in Australia. While Prime Minister Albanese's commitment to prioritise this initiative is commendable and represents a positive step forward, there are still some unanswered questions. 3 things to consider: 🤝 Australia holds massive potential to emerge as a renewable energy superpower, but will the government honour its commitment? ⏳ It may take some time before a comprehensive renewables industry package is implemented, so how long until we actually see it take effect? ⛽ Despite the push for renewable energy, Australia still relies heavily on mining while new oil and gas projects continue to be approved. Doesn't this feel oxymoronic? During the SuperReturn Energy Transition event, Alexander Romanishyn, Strategy Director at Razom We Stand, discussed important aspects of energy transition and investment opportunities. The panel emphasized the EU's strategy to achieve ambitious climate targets by utilizing public funds, carbon pricing, regulations, and private capital. Key panel highlights include: - EU aims to meet these ambitious targets through leveraging a combination of public funds, carbon pricing, regulations and private capital. And as exmapes provide some numbers: - 37% of the €672.5 billion Recovery and Resilience Facility under Next Generation EU is being spent on climate-related objectives. - Horizon Europe has a budget of €95.5 billion for 2021-2027, with 35% earmarked for climate action - Economic savings from reducing expenditure on fossil fuel imports, estimated at around €2.8 trillion from 2031-2050 under the 90% emissions reduction target - Potential funds freed up by divesting from Russian fossil fuel investments, promoting strategic autonomy. The total investments by financial institutions in Russian fossil fuel companies amounted to around $26 billion - The European Commission has established a €50 billion Ukraine Facility. Notably, 20% of Pillar 1 and 2 is earmarked for green projects, providing a substantial boost to sustainable development in Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction.
