National Wildlife Federation has a new product for those of you thinking about state primacy and CO2 storage! Check out our newest brief, spearheaded by our talented CDR Justice fellow Jake Ferrell: Geologic Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide: The State of Responsible Primacy. The brief includes details on what it takes to successfully permit a Class VI well, why the federal government has encouraged states to apply for primacy, and how states like North Dakota, Wyoming, and Louisiana came to acquire primacy. Additionally it explores the various qualms around primacy, including from some environmental justice organizations. Exciting News in another super #FlumeFriday: Launch of the SPREE Joint Industry Project! We’re thrilled to announce that Reefy is part of an incredible consortium working on the SPREE (Scour Protection for Ecological Enhancement) Joint Industry Project! Our focus? Testing the installation and hydraulic performance of engineered reef units as a full or partial replacement for armour stones in the Scheldt Flume and Atlantic Basin of Deltares, so stay tuned for cool videos! Why this matters: * We aim to not only reduce environmental impacts of offshore wind but actively enhance marine ecosystems! * Armour stone supply can be limited and impactful, making alternatives crucial for the energy transition. * A new approach could benefit the environment and reduce material use —unlocking significant potential! Is France showing some early signs of leadership in wind wildlife science in the run up to the next #CWW (Conference on Wind Energy and Wildlife Impacts) 2025? It certainly seems that way. A big applause to them for opening e3 IdentiFlight France, a 100% subsidiary of the German office, and bringing that technology to a new market.  And the same for South Africa -  an early mover of wind wildlife spatial planning, #PCFM (post-construction fatality monitoring) and the setting of bat thresholds - now, once again, showing its ability to lead from the South with a similar move towards technology advancement.  All eyes on #IdentiFlight. You’re one of our only hopes. https://lnkd.in/ewDBDq96

On October 24th and 25th, the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium held its annual meeting. Whale Seeker's Senior Data Scientist, Malcolm Kennedy, had the opportunity to be a part of this crucial event. 2023 was the first year that the plummeting North Atlantic Right Whale population numbers showed hints of levelling out. This annual meeting serves as an example of how bringing academia, industry, and government together year after year can lead to effective solutions. However, there's still much work to be done to mitigate the double threat of ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements on this species. Malcolm spoke with Susan Heaslip and Katherine McKercher from Fisheries and Oceans Canada about the challenges of processing large-scale aerial data for tracking the North Atlantic Right Whale. He also got to hear about monitoring challenges and opportunities around offshore wind projects off the US East Coast, including Ørsted's offshore wind project and its specific needs, as presented by Sharon Whitesell. During the meeting, it was highlighted that passive acoustic monitoring alone will not be enough to reliably detect North Atlantic Right Whales near construction zones. Various modalities will be required, including visual survey efforts, to effectively mitigate risks while harnessing the power of offshore wind for energy transition. Two things: Navigation data + Meeting in person 1) 🗺 We're often asked about the Oshen micro-vessels ability to navigate. As we move into a period of frequent testing, we'll get more and more data to show you on navigation ability, and below is a short clip from the 100km mission. The micro-vessel tacks against the wind to reach a target waypoint, then follows a straight path direct to a distant waypoint, reaching it with precision. If you'd like to hear about the MetOcean and PAM data we can collect on missions like this, please get in touch! 2) 🌊 I'm attending Global Offshore Wind for the first time next week. Funded by the European Commission with nearly EUR 6 million, the project will run for four years, during which time the consortium will work on bringing forward LCOE-lowering solutions as well as those reducing the impact on marine wildlife. #offshorewind #floatingwind FLOATFARM

He discusses property values, noise, effects on birds, bats, and other wildlife, aesthetic and heritage concerns, and just how green, functional, and effective wind energy actually is.
