The Elmina B. Sewall Foundation seeks to create a healthier and more equitable Maine, where all people, animals, and environment thrive. The Foundation’s Animal Welfare Grants provide support to animal shelters throughout Maine, primarily through one-year operating support grants of $15,000 to $40,000 per year. Support is also provided for efforts working at the intersection of social services and animal well-being, including service and therapy animal programs, social service or other community organization-based programs that support animals to stay with their families and out of shelters (e.g. pet food pantries), programs that support families and animals together in times of crisis (temporary sheltering for animals and people facing domestic violence or other disasters), and those that otherwise address social justice issues as they pertain to animals. ICYMI. The ARL took in 46 MORE dogs from the SAME commercial breeder we rescued nearly 100 dogs from last fall. As a community, we have to ask more questions. 👉🏼Why does this continue to happen? 👉🏼Why was this licensed commercial breeder allowed the opportunity to reoffend? 👉🏼What changes need to be made from the agencies who oversee licensed breeders on the inspection/licensing process so this doesn’t continue to happen? 👉🏼How do we ensure commercial breeders are giving adequate care, physically and mentally, to the animals under their supervision? 👉🏼How many more animals have to suffer before changes are made? The number of animals entering shelters annually has decreased since 2011, with the number of dogs decreasing most significantly, from an average of 3.9 million in 2011 to 3.1 million in 2019. Jan 23, 2024. Of this approximate number of shelters, 56% are classified as NO KILL shelters, defined as humane sanctuaries that qualify as a 90% save rate.

When a pet is lost, the goal is simple: return them to their family as quickly as possible. This has become the guiding principle for Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW), which now prioritizes returning pets home rather than filling up shelters. With the help of a Best Friends Animal Society expert embedded into their staff for 12 months, TAW shifted from bringing in every stray to engaging with owners in the community to get lost pets back home.
