..thought provoking discussion on “Securing Africa’s Critical Minerals wealth: A role for sovereign Wealth Funds” this morning at the Wilson Center Africa Program hosted by Oge Onubogu Bottom line; Mineral wealth MUST benefit the communities and the state. Despite developing legal and operational frameworks to support the entire ecosystem of direct and indirect operations in mineral extraction, weaknesses in contract enforcement still persist due to gaps in state capacity and “will”. On top of stunting growth from anticipated revenues, this has led to violent conflict in mineral-rich countries! The expert panel of Helaina Matza, Abdullahi Sule John Kayode Fayemi, PhD. Chipokota Mwanawasa discussed how this narrative can be changed. Critical for me was the vital role of coordination between the African private and public sectors across national boundaries in; i) negotiating mineral development with international partners ii) developing physical infrastructure like railways and roads 👏🏿🙌🏿

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐫 Today I had the pleasure of attending the Partnership For Global Infrastructure and Investment Lobito Corridor Private Sector Investment Forum, graced by His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema. As highlighted by the Africa Policy Research Institute, the Lobito Corridor project seeks to build a railway line connecting the critical minerals mines in Zambia and DRC with the Lobito port in Angola. The major interest in the Lobito Corridor is to use it as a route for transporting critical raw materials (CRMs), strategic minerals, and products of the EV battery value chain, from the DRC and Zambia to the EU and the US. Several MoUs and agreements related to the Lobito Corridor have recently been signed. The parties involved are diverse, including the EU, the US, Angola, the DRC, Zambia, AfDB, and AFC as well as a consortium comprising Trafigura, Mota-Engil, and Vecturis.

Our Global Head of Strategic Investments, Julien Rolland, joined the FT Africa Summit this week to discuss Trafigura’s role in the development of the Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR). This important transport corridor runs from Angola's port of Lobito to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing a critical connection for the region. The US government is also supporting the renovation of the 1,300km railway line. As well as the domestic importance of the line, Julien highlighted the railway’s benefits for the metals industry, with Trafigura and its consortium partners holding a 30-year concession to operate and upgrade this route. “The DRC has enormous mineral potential, but limited infrastructure. Two decades ago, it was producing a few hundred thousand tonnes of copper; today, it’s closer to four million tonnes—but still relying on a highly congested road network to get the product to export.
