The virtual, two-day event hosted by Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Polk County School Districts delivered enriching professional development and presentations. "Higher education has been inching toward inclusion, advocates say, but there is a long way to go. And the measures taken — like classroom modifications or informational campaigns — are mostly voluntary." K-12 Schools (and colleges/universities) with high numbers of first generation college students have evolved over time to acknowledge that it is not enough for students to get TO college but we must also empower them to get THROUGH college. It's encouraging to see this evolution and growth in higher ed for students with autism. School and system leaders must not only see college as a possibility for our students with disabilities but collaborate and partner with higher ed to ensure they thrive there. https://lnkd.in/gZ-Gqc8e

This role is proving to be an invaluable asset in providing personalized support and fostering inclusion for children with autism. Shadow teachers play a vital role in tailoring support to the unique needs of each child, navigating the challenges and strengths associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By offering individualized assistance, they empower children to engage more fully in academic tasks, social interactions, and daily routines. One of the key reasons why shadow teachers are essential is their ability to promote inclusion in mainstream settings. By facilitating communication and collaboration, they create an environment where children with autism can thrive alongside their peers, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. Moreover, shadow teachers serve as a bridge between the child, educators, and peers, facilitating understanding and support across all levels. Through their guidance and advocacy, they contribute to the holistic development and well-being of children with autism.
