2024: A collision of trust, innovation, and politics The 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals a new paradox at the heart of society. Rapid innovation offers the promise of a new era of prosperity, but instead risks exacerbating trust issues, leading to further societal instability and political polarization. In a year where half the global population can vote in new leaders, the acceptance of innovation is essential to the success of our society. While people agree that scientists are essential to the acceptance of innovation, many are concerned that politics has too much influence on science. This perception is contributing to the decline of trust in the institutions responsible for steering us through change and towards a more prosperous future. A democratic system typically yields superior decisions compared to other forms of governance. However, its ultimate legitimacy does not stem from the quality of its decisions, but rather from the popular mandate that supports them. While my argument in favor of democracy is based on normative principles, I also endorse the idea that the rationale behind democracy does not rely on its outcomes alone. This perspective aligns well with the observation that, due to epistemic reasons, democracy often outperforms alternative models. The emergence of these new ideological and ethical frameworks, which challenge the liberal-democratic foundations of the international order, could indeed lead to a fundamental rethinking of the core assumptions and boundaries of the IR field. This could involve a more pluralistic and inclusive understanding of global politics, one that is better equipped to grapple with the complexities and diversities of the contemporary world.

Book recommendation 3 for 2024. Why do democracies falter or collapse? Long before the current scholarly and popular focus on democracies, the great Nancy Bermeo studied 30 cases of democratic decline. She expected, at the start of the project, to find that democracies fail because ordinary people lose their faith in self-governance. What she found, instead, is that democratic decline is the result of bad leadership -- that democracies fail when leaders adopt highly polarizing positions and pursue their own self-interest and not the common good. This is particularly relevant today, with the USA struggling, in my view, with a general failure of the quality of political leadership. #democracy #leadership #politics #politicalscience #books
