Meanwhile, around the world, devastating disasters and humanitarian crises also demand our attention,” said Patricia McIlreavy, president and CEO of CDP. Our thanks to The Patterson Foundation for its contribution of $500,000 to CDP to support disaster recovery here in the U.S. as well as internationally. The donation includes $250,000 going to the California Wildfires Recovery Fund and $250,000 going to the Global Recovery Fund to strengthen recovery efforts from the magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Tibet as well as other disasters worldwide. To respond or not to respond. That is the dumbest question! After years in humanitarian fundraising I cannot tell you HOW MANY NEEDLESSLY long conversations were had about if we respond to a disaster. Right now the world is continuing to see a massive increase in natural and human destruction. From Hurricane Helene to the increasing displacement crisis across the Middle East. To continued war in Sudan etc. etc. etc. No I will cede the point that all nonprofits cannot respond to all disasters--an art center should not be responding to all disasters. But if you are in the humanitarian space you have to respond--you literally do not have a choice. Here are some ways to do it: 1️⃣ Is your community/donors in the area? Send them notes letting you know you are thinking of them, and asking if they need help. (Every nonprofit with donors effected by the hurricane needs to do this--so simple, easy and impactful). 2️⃣ Your desire is always to be 'partner of first choice'. You do not want you givers going and giving to other organizations. So you do the fundraising and pass the money through. 3️⃣ If a pass through does not seem like something you can do--share a list of 3-5 'vetted' partners and encourage them to give through these organizations. In addition to this here are some common disaster response myths that need debunked: 1️⃣ It will hurt general operating giving. FALSE: You will most likely see an increase in general fund giving when you respond to disasters. Why? You become more relevant. 2️⃣ It will eat into staff time. Partly True...mostly false. Yes it will take some time, but if you do it right it has a multiplier effect--so yes your staff will have to spare some time up front, but it may actually get you places faster than if you had not. + you wont be combating people asking why you didn't respond. So much more I could write. But I'll stop for now. Jeremy Reis what are your thoughts here? I know you have some strong opinions.
