Great stuff by Highmark Health. Individual SDoH assessments are super important.... but what's even more critical, is how we utilize those assessments to address social determinants of health in product and plan build outs in both Medicare Advantage and Medicaid. Supplemental Benefits in MA and Value Add Benefits in Medicaid have evolved over the last 10 years.. but what's lacking is the creativity around customization on the individual member level. One size fit all Supplemental Benefits and Value Add Benefits do not fully address social determinants of health. The MCOs and their down stream vendors that put emphasis and strategy around customization will be the ones that succeed during the new age of Managed Care. #medicareadvantage #managedmedicaid #supplementalbenefits #valueaddbenefits #CMS #SDoH #socialdeterminantsofhealth Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
We performed an analysis on 800,000 social determinants of health assessments of our own patients and members. Although there is some variation by community, the top five needs across our footprint are: financial resources; health literacy; housing instability; social connections and safety. The study, published in JAMA, highlights the need to include individual and local data when building plans to address social drivers of health. We believe health systems, employers and government agencies should expand individual SDoH assessments to better inform care, program design and investments. A survey of health directors in large US cities reveals a troubling lack of trust between communities and public health (only 18% report high trust). However, all leaders prioritize partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs). While trust seems to be a challenge (only 28% felt it's improving), there's a clear recognition of the importance of collaboration. All public health department leaders ranked partnerships with CBOs as their top priority – a staggering 79% agreed. The article highlights a strength in collaboration. Communities, especially those facing health inequities, need support to collaborate with public health organizations. #Policy #Healthcare #PublicHealth
