We know Supervised Release works at ensuring people make their court dates from the care of their own communities. But what's harder to measure is the trauma the program prevents—trauma from the senseless harm that jail inflicts on people who are waiting for their day in court. ➡️ Read more about this urgently needed alternative to pretrial detention: https://lnkd.in/e6VEAV3V

Prison crisis? Nice article summarising many of the different ways we could reduce our reliance on prison. The thing is this is not new stuff. Those who work in the criminal justice sector have known this stuff for a while, they speak about it, they write about it. The lack of change can surely not be about ignorance? https://lnkd.in/ebDqtXhN

#EDITORIAL: The mind-boggling mess in our prison systems needs a thorough audit. We are perplexed at the conditions of some of our jail houses. You see most of the prisoners in there are remandees, and most of them are teenagers as well as the very poor who cannot afford a private lawyer. Read more here: ( https://wp.me/peM2NU-28Ij )

Have you ever wondered if our overall mindsets on jail being rehabilitating for offenders is linked to our convict history in Australia? ⛓️💥 Well that’s something I’ve recently thought about. It’s a colonialist mindset in my view. We truly believe that jail will ‘fix’ people. I wonder if most people who descended from convicts have this deep intrinsic thinking that jails can create good outcomes? What I do know is the system doesn’t work and evidence strongly suggests once you end up in jail, you’ll most likely reoffend once released and end up back in there. Not a great outcome. I also know jail didn’t exist in my culture before colonisation. Nor did court for that matter. We never sat before a ‘Judge’ who sat behind a bench taller than us and shamed us. That’s not how we created safer communities. Anyway, let’s reframe the paradigm around jail systems! They are broken and our children definitely don’t belong in them! If anyone has any thoughts, please feel free to share them below. #CriminalJustice #Reform

🏛️David Breakspear discusses The Labour Party's new prison reform plans and the broader crisis in the UK justice system.⚖️ Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood proposed releasing certain inmates after 40% of their sentence to ease overcrowding. 🔓 With 87,000+ people incarcerated and 57% lacking basic literacy, Breakspear argues for long-term solutions focusing on education and prevention rather than quick fixes. 📚🧠 Read his full article here: https://lnkd.in/erevbt4K #PrisonReform #CriminalJusticeReform
