Most EU countries have missed the deadline to submit their updated National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), essential for meeting the EU’s climate goals for 2030 and 2050. These plans are designed to translate EU climate legislation into national actions, outlining how each country will contribute to the bloc’s targets. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first instance of delays. Most countries were late in submitting their initial drafts last year, revealing that the EU was off track to meet its 2030 goals, such as renewable energy commitments. Despite being required to revise their plans by 30 June, the five submitted reports indicate that countries are still falling short of their targets. 🖋️ Report by Bianca Volmich

The result from our recent poll was spot on – the energy sector contributes the most to carbon emissions globally. Yet only 40% of climate action plans submitted by governments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) prioritize adaptation in the energy sector. Investment in clean energy and resilient energy infrastructures are important in tackling net zero goals and meeting rising energy demands. As WMO Secretary-General Prof Petteri Taalas said, “time is not on our side, and our climate is changing before our eyes.” Now is the time to act.
