Delighted to announce our publication! 📚✨ People make a lot of assumptions about organic agriculture (that standards of production are the same everywhere/ that it’s inherently more sustainable/that certification is meaningless). In our new paper, we compared organic standards in Mexico, the US and Canada to a framework of sustainability principles and practices, and looked at how decisions about organic standards are made (governance). What we found may surprise you! Having my name published in this academic journal is more than just a personal accomplishment. It's an acknowledgment of the countless hours of research, collaboration with brilliant minds, and a step forward in demystifying the assumptions about organic agriculture. Here's what it means to me: ✅ Validation: Our research has passed rigorous peer-review processes, affirming its quality and contribution to the field. 🌱 Knowledge Expansion: Our work advances the understanding of organic agriculture's governance complexities and required practices for sustainable management. 🌏 Impact: It opens doors to discussions, challenges assumptions, and may influence future practices. 🙏 Gratitude: For the lead author Susanna Klassen for being an incredible academic/life mentor, and for the brilliant and compassionate team members whom I had the pleasure of learning from. I'm excited to continue this journey of exploration and discovery in the world of sustainable agriculture. 🌾🌟 🚀📖 #AcademicPublishing #OrganicAgriculture #regenerativeagriculture https://lnkd.in/g8qCyDch

Department of Food Science and Technology researcher explores agrifood system solutions Ovissipour’s research is dedicated to advancing the sustainability, resiliency, and robustness of agrifood systems. This involves exploring innovative approaches such as insect-based food and feed production, repurposing agrifood waste, and implementing aquaponic and hydroponic systems. The existing world food production system grapples with challenges such as limited agricultural water and land availability, compounded by rising greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, a critical concern in food supply chains contributes to a substantial amount of food loss. Addressing these challenges is at the forefront of my program at Texas A&M, where we are dedicated to exploring new sources of sustainable protein and innovative food production methods. https://buff.ly/41zagDF

What new insights and tools for moving towards sustainable food and agriculture did we take home from the 3rd Utrecht Degrowth Symposium? 🐌 🌱 On 29th September 2023, policymakers, researchers, students, farmers, and social movements came together to explore what a degrowth perspective can bring to the debate on agri-food system sustainability. Here, we summarise and reflect on the central insights of the afternoon and share recordings of the keynotes and panel discussion. "The symposium made clear that agri-food system transformation is not a purely socio-technical form of change revolving around, for example, food production or transport technologies, and economic measures aimed at ‘correcting’ the market," reflects organiser Dr. Giuseppe Feola. Learn more and watch the videos through the link below! 📹 With Leonardo van den Berg, Mariana Calcagni González, David Meng-Chuen Chen, Giuseppe Feola, Laura van Oers, Roos Saat, Federico Savini, Jacob Smessaert, Julia Spanier & Christine Teunissen. #degrowth #agriculture #agrifoodsystems #foodsystems

It's a new year for us here at Manzanita Cooperative. We've submitted an invited grant application to the National Science Foundation, that if funded, can lay some really exciting groundwork toward our mission of native-plant derived agricultural sustainability. Looking at emerging research, there is growing urgency in finding disruptive, innovative solutions to improve sustainability at the food-energy-health nexus. Look what can happen if more grain acreage transitions to rotations beyond the standard soy/corn. https://lnkd.in/ghjrAH3B

🎉 Exciting News! 🎉 📝 I am thrilled to announce that our latest academic article, "Impact of European Egg Marking System in France: Empirical Time Series Analysis between 2017 and 2022" has been published in the Review of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Studies. 📚 🔍 Our study questions the effectiveness of the public intervention to support sustainable practices, using analysis of the demand for fresh eggs in France. The results highlight the potential benefits of mandatory marking in driving transparency and favoring sustainable products over less sustainable options. 🤝 This work was co-authored with Kelvin Balcombe and Philippe Aurier. The completion of this study could not have been possible without the expertise and great support of Professor Alain FRANCOIS-HEUDE. The data were shared by FranceAgriMer, French National Institute for Agricultural and Seafood Products, which has been cooperative and trustful with our work. Feel free to check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eidi-VtH #Research #AcademicPublication #Sustainability #FoodSector #Eggs #Organic #LabelRouge #PublicPolicy #EnvironmentalImpact

Congratulations to the business and academic collaborators awarded Business Innovation Vouchers by Growing Kent & Medway to advance sustainable innovation in our food systems! 🌱 5 of the 13 funded projects will draw on the expertise of academics in the School of Biosciences and School of Chemistry and Forensic Science at the University of Kent: 👉 Professor Tobias von der Haar will be working with Nutri-San to develop a yeast strain which can break down and destroy the plastic used in the seaweed cultivation process. 👉 Dr Robert Barker is helping the UK Carbon Code of Conduct understand the impact of different sizes, types and application rates of small rock particles (known as fines, a waste product from quarrying) on carbon capture and soil health. 👉 Dr Anastasios Tsaousis is using cutting-edge genetic sequencing techniques to help Inspro understand how different diets and environments influence the gut microbiome of black soldier fly larvae and how the natural fertiliser they produce can improve the nutrient availability and microbial diversity in soil. 👉 Dr Helen Cockerton will analyse the chemical profiles of hops to support Wantsum Brewery to develop a new, sustainable, non-alcoholic beer using UK-grown hops. 👉 Dr Cockerton will also be working closely with Ramsgate Brewery Limited (Gadds’) and a Kent-based hop breeder to delve into the unique aroma, flavour and chemical composition of UK hops to help breweries select and use the right hops for their needs.
