Whilst I agree that the current planning system could do with a rethink and its legislation needs reviewing properly, I do think the creation (and funding of) 300 new planning posts in England is an insult. In England, there are 226 district councils. 62 unitary authority councils and 36 metropolitan borough councils and thats not including national parks planning boards (10). This equates to around 334 English local planning authorities so they're saying less than one planner per authority? I work for a semi-rural authority that receives almost 5,000 planning applications per year and we could do with half a dozen more planners at least and what about additional funding for Built Heritage especially with retrofit of traditional buildings and the climate agenda??? #Chancellor #rachelreeves #angelarayner #jimmcmahon #matthewpennycook #dcms #mhclg https://lnkd.in/eqCwDj2f

Rental property investors are the only businesses in Australia that do not pay commercial property taxes. Is this situation fair? It means productive businesses pay higher rates to subsidise property investors. This can mean a more affordable and fairer housing system in Australia.
New Housing Policy paper published: ADEPT is calling on the new government to empower local authorities with the necessary tools and resources to address the housing crisis and create truly sustainable communities. Our new Housing Policy Position paper outlines how the government’s target of 1.5 million new homes can only be met through coordinated local action and a fundamental rethink of the planning system. The policy position calls for a long term housing plan to build new homes, to improve the existing stock and to meet both current and future environmental challenges. It emphasises that sustainable and affordable housing solutions can only be achieved with coherent leadership, support and resources from the government, as well as a planning system that enables the delivery of comprehensive infrastructure alongside housing developments. Congratulations to Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for being the 11th LPA during 2024 to adopt a Plan containing strategic policies 👏 According to The Planning Inspectorate‘s monitoring data, of those eleven: 1 was submitted in 2019 5 were submitted in 2021 4 were submitted in 2022 1 (RBKC’s) submitted in 2023 There’s a long list of other plans containing strategic policies at examination (34 by my count), 16 of which were submitted before January 2023 ⏱️ In addition, there are 9 other LPAs that have undertaken a Regulation 19 consultation starting in 2024 which have yet to be submitted 🚀 Will the change of Government, changes to national planning policy and implementation of aspects of the LURA take the brakes off plan making. It could be a very busy 6-12 months! 📈 #planmaking #localplans Stantec
New RBKC Local Plan adopted last night - a great document produced at pace within 3 years with plenty of engagement/ consultation in the mix. Use of social media platforms to engage with a much wider and different audience giving significant more responses and well over a thousand hits. Much to note. Placemaking embedded within the policy approach, emphasis on optimising land for new homes, low affordable housing threshold, new energy use intensity policy, circular economy, strong support for retrofitting in an historic environment to name a few. It will provide a solid template for good growth in Kensington and Chelsea underlined by future development in the Borough being green, inclusive and liveable. A brilliant collaborative approach from the Spatial Planning team - well done!

NYC’s new Green Track for Housing Rule exempts some small and medium-sized residential developments from undergoing City Environmental Quality Review procedures. The rule is effective now and is part of a mayoral initiative to increase the housing supply and reduce regulatory constraints on new development. While I appreciate the enthusiasm and keeping the north alignment of the LRT in the public mind, this is in the "we have bigger fish to fry" domain at the moment. The province is firmly in the driver's seat and their prime objective is to make most efficient use of taxpayer dollars and extend the Green Line as far south as possible to maximize ridership. The north LRT, which has a business case, is second fiddle for the foreseeable future. https://lnkd.in/g--KuMk4
