As a Rotarian, today, on World Peace Day, 21st September 2024, I initiated a 3-hour Sensitization program for the Rotary Club of Bangalore (RCB) at the NABK campus (National Association of Blind Karnataka). ✨
Some of us were guided through an orientation, A Trust Walk, and activities to stimulate sensory faculties of Smell -touch- and feel” under blindfold, and then a generous and sumptuous Sattvic lunch ( Food cooked on principals of Sattva: the highest guna, representing balance and harmony). 🚦
Some of the stories of hope, aspirations, and true spirit of resilience we heard from some visually impaired beneficiaries were humbling, and I can't even start to express the admiration and respect I have for their challenges and victories after taking the "Trust Walk" today. ( walking blindfolded, in that dark world and I wondered how some of us with Eyesight still don't have a vision in life).

⚡ - Those in the disability community come from varied cultural backgrounds and hold a myriad of identities including their disability so let's think hard about how our words will affect others and how we can change the narrative to be more inclusive, Kind, and sensitive.
⚡ - It is not the person with the disability’s job to constantly educate those who do not have a disability, so let’s take the initiative to learn about their condition and its implications.
⚡ - And yes remember to show Empathy, not Sympathy!
