Putting to use the unique capabilities at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Abagail Carson, a chemical engineering major at Georgia Institute of Technology, has worked to better understand the recrystallization behaviors of various materials in temperatures near -80 degrees Celsius (-112 Fahrenheit). Carson, a physical science student working at the ERDC Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) over the summer, applied the splat assay to investigate how materials recrystallized in frigid conditions. The assay involves dropping one microliter of material onto a glass cooled to -80 degrees Celsius. The material, once splatted, spreads out evenly, yielding a single layer of crystals. The development of these crystals is then captured on a light microscope over a 30-minute period to quantify crystal growth. The materials tested, which ranged from simple salts to complex polymers to antifreeze proteins, provided varying results ranging from small non-evolving to large crystalline architectures, offering insight into the materials’ ice adhesion characteristics. Carson’s research was conducted as part of CRREL’s Force Protection and Sustainment Branch, working under Emily Asenath-Smith, PhD and the Advanced Materials Team. She was one of several students who joined CRREL in recent months, and part of a much larger group of students who provided valuable support to research efforts across each of ERDC’s world-class laboratories. I came across an innovative idea over the weekend. Germany lacks qualified labor force in electrical engineering, technicians with vocational education are as scarce as bachelor and master graduates. #fachkräftemangel Often, universities and the dual system of vocational education fight against each other to attract young people. The approach of FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences is much better: collaboration instead of competition, the first semester integrates apprenticeship at a company with bachelor studies, and after the first semester intensive mentoring guides the students' decision to go the one way or the other. A super clever idea to attract people into an industry which is crucial for the green technologies of the future. Next year it will be 30 years since I started my University studies at BTH as Electrical Engineering Master. Today, I had the opportunity to visit again for the BTH event ”Öppet Hus” together with daughters and friends. The latest news and research in many fields were show cased; Software engineering, Mechanical engineering, Spacial planning; using the maker space, #Ericssonspace, AI, VR, lectures, information sessions, talking to engaged students, representatives and professors. The young group (hopefully soon university students) got information of the educations, the excellent collaboration between academia and companies along with the great opportunities they can unlock through university studies. Software enginering and research has been a really strong area at BTH for decades (ranked #1 in Europe #2 in world) - tremendously important engine in the eco system to have latest research available and new colleagues joining us at #ericssonkarlskrona Another area with a lot of focus in todays event is Marine Technology - booming in the region through investments in defense, environment and sustainable energy - planning to employ thousands within the coming years - super interesting! 🔍 PhD Journey 🔍 Exciting times are ahead as we prepare to move into our new state-of-the-art SPECS building, "SPECTRA," at the University of Hertfordshire! The advanced facilities and cutting-edge technology promise to elevate our research capabilities to new heights. However, this transition brings mixed feelings, especially for those of us in the final stages of our PhDs. As a final-year PhD student, the move means disassembling and reassembling my test rig, which is a significant undertaking at this critical point in my research. This process includes not only taking apart and setting up the rig again but also performing thorough calibration and validation to ensure everything functions correctly. The delays associated with the move and other potential challenges add to the complexity. Despite these hurdles, I am confident that overcoming these obstacles will strengthen our resilience and prepare us to handle future challenges with greater ease. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our technical staff. Their hard work and dedication are making this transition possible. Additionally, I am hopeful that the Dean of Research Office will prioritize the needs of students, particularly those on studentships, by considering extensions to accommodate any disruptions caused by this relocation.  While this situation is challenging, it also presents an opportunity for growth. Navigating these difficulties will undoubtedly make us more adept at managing delays and unforeseen circumstances in our future careers. Machines, cranes, bridges, musical instruments... they all vibrate. And they vibrate all the more when subjected to periodic excitations "at the right frequency". This is the famous phenomenon of mechanical resonance, which can lead to destruction if nothing is done to dampen the oscillations. CiSMAT has acquired a tool (IRIS-M) that enables the vibration modes of machines, bridges, etc. to be visualized directly, even when they are still undetectable to the naked eye. This tool is useful for detecting the source of vibration problems before it is too late, for developing anti-vibration solutions, but also for teaching purposes.
