Are the goods you buy produced by child or forced labour? The Bureau of International Labor Affairs Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor just put out the latest update to its list of goods produced with child and forced labour. Here are some of the things we find most striking: There are now around 160 million children in child labour globally, according to the ILO and UNICEF. These children are found on every continent and spread across industries, especially agriculture, manufacturing and mining. ILAB reports that goods like gold, bricks, sugarcane, coffee, tobacco, cattle and cotton lead the list of goods produced with child labour. 🌾 The prevalence of child and forced labour is growing in the mining and processing of critical minerals, adding new materials and countries to the ILAB list. For example, the cobalt sector in the DRC now faces both child and forced labour, and forced labour has been found in the Indonesian nickel sector. Critical minerals on the list are found in everything crucial to a green transition, like batteries, semiconductors, solar tech, and electric vehicles. They’re also needed in defence tech, construction and metallurgy. ⛏️ Combatting child and forced labour depends on workers’ rights. Decent work, unionisation and collective bargaining are essential to combat labour exploitation–including child labour. Reliance on audits isn’t enough—worker empowerment is key to preventing abuses. ✊ Read our summary here: https://lnkd.in/eyYchn36 #HumanRights #ChildLabor #ForcedLabor #SupplyChain #EnergyTransition #WorkersRights

Great to see the Bangladeshi interim government seeking Danish support on two critical fronts: labour rights and climate action. In the current context such partnerships are more important than ever. Denmark's expertise in renewable energy and sustainable development, combined with Bangladesh's commitment to improving labour conditions, can be the building bricks for a resilient future. #DKBDpartnerships #Sustainability #ClimateAction #LabourRights #Bangladesh #Denmark #GlobalPartnership #GreenEconomy

Congratulations to IDH , GIZ and the UN Global Compact for the #LivingWage and #LivingIncome Summit yesterday. It was excellent to see many familiar faces and to meet some new colleagues as well! The panels were very provoking and inspiring. A key takeaway for me was the role of human-made crises on #inequality and #climatechange in making living wages and living income to farmers even more urgent! Income of workers and farmers will determine our ability to adapt to increasing temperatures both from a human health, farm productivity, and food affordability point of view. Although urgent, it was also a common thread in the conference the need for "bottom-up approaches", #socialdialogue and tripartite wage negotiations in making wage increases sustainable. It is critical to act urgently but also to ensure social dialogue and bring workers and farmers along. Definitely not an easy task and a journey filled with complex challenges, but it was great to hear how different organisations are tackling them.
