Read mine and Eva Maria Jernsands newly published open access article "Political and relational co-creation for inclusive tourism development" in Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. In the article, understanding of the 'who' in co-creation is widened, and the 'how' expands into suggestions for just inclusion of a diversity of actors. A new open access paper, created in the framework of the #TExTOUR project, is now online! "Advances in Digital and Cultural Tourism Management" focuses on advancing understanding of the sustainable development potential of cultural tourism by examining successful policy interventions, emerging cultural tourism trends, advancements in visitor management systems, new business and governance models, and the opportunities arising from ICT in the twenty-first century. "The necessity and consequences of the exponential growth in tourism activity experienced throughout the world over the past half-century have been increasingly questioned by an expanding body of activists and critical researchers. One of the emerging responses within this debate concerns calls for reversing the trend in pursuit of touristic ‘degrowth’. This discussion has been inspired by a longstanding body of research problematizing the imperative and consequences of economic growth more generally, initiated by natural and social scientists. This article offers a state-of-the-art overview of the application of degrowth perspectives to discussions of (sustainable) tourism development and outlines a future agenda for research and praxis continuing this important line of inquiry." If you're concerned about the impact of tourism on local communities our latest video might be of interest. We visited Tintagel Castle, a site steeped in legend and history, to see if it lives up to the hype. Located on the rugged Cornish coast, Tintagel is famous for its association with King Arthur, but also for the challenges that come with managing a popular tourist destination in a small, historic village. In our video, we explore how Tintagel balances its mythical allure with modern-day realities. Using our BB STARS Social Tourism criteria, we assess the site's impact on social good, economic contribution, accessibility, and sustainability. With up to 3,000 visitors daily in peak season, the pressure on both the landscape and the local community is immense. We share our thoughts on whether the visitor experience justifies the environmental and cultural costs, and invite you to join the conversation on over-tourism and its effects. We also delve into the ongoing debate about Cornish heritage, drawing on insights from Dr. Tehmina Goskar, who raises critical questions about how Tintagel's history is presented and whether it's being used as a "cash cow" at the expense of local culture. 🌍 A destination's developmental journey can often feel overwhelming, particularly if they feel they are lacking in resources, expertise, or even inspiration! This document, showcasing examples of best practices from cities' entries to the 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism competition, may inspire destinations with innovative ways to foster accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation or reviving or maintaining cultural heritage.
