The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is a large, diverse region comprising of more than 20 countries. It has recorded an increasing prevalence of MS over the past decades, but the management of MS varies considerably between countries due to the availability, accessibility and affordability of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). MDMSA representatives connected with their counterparts at SALDA at Africa Health 2023 to discuss collaboration in the growth of the laboratory diagnostics industry. The two organizations are committed to working together to support the development of the industry in South Africa and Africa. Laboratory diagnostics play a vital role in healthcare, providing essential information for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, access to quality laboratory diagnostics is often limited in developing countries, including in South Africa and Africa. MDMSA and SALDA believe that collaboration is key to addressing this challenge. Six months ago, I asked Prof Babatunde Salako, DG of NIMR if he could house the National Health Research Committee (NHRC) at NIMR. Yesterday, at the commissioning of the Human Virology and Genomics facility, I can happily say he delivered on my ask. I would like to take this time to applaud Prof Babatunde Salako for his commitment to the betterment of our country’s research prowess and taking NIMR to the next level during his eight year tenure as DG. I also applaud his team of researchers for their dedication to improve Nigeria’s health indices. With this new office, NHRC can stay close to the heart of their cause, and continue working towards guiding and supporting #research initiatives that align with our national health priorities, enforcing standards, transparency and accountability when conducting research studies in Nigeria, and ultimately breathe new life into Nigeria’s research sector. Again, I extend thanks to Dr Salako and his team for creating a space for the NHRC at their institution. Collaboration is the key to our success.
