Is it possible to stop “Addison's disease” and other autoimmune diseases? That is the hope of Olle Kämpe, who is a clinical researcher at Karolinska Institutet. It is not known what initiates an auto immune reaction, just that it starts several years before the patients come to clinical care. Kämpe and his group has discovered that the immune system in all patients with Addison's disease reacted to the very same substance – the enzyme 21-hydroxylase. Kämpe and this team are working on a promising treatment for patients with Addison's. Ecstatic to share our latest work, out today in The Lancet Digital Health. Led by authors Torsten Dahlén and Gustaf Edgren, we searched for unknown transfusion-transmitted diseases using 19M blood transfusions from 1M blood donors to 1.7M patients using #realworlddata in Sweden. With a novel agnostic method, 1155 different disease entities were assessed. Our main finding is that there does not appear to be unknown transmissible agents in the Swedish blood donor pool that have a sufficiently high prevalence and clinical penetrance to result in widespread transfusion-transmission. Additionally, this novel approach serves as a proof-of-concept for agnostic surveillance for transfusion-transmitted disease using routinely collected blood-bank and health-care data. https://lnkd.in/dg_sqBqG Michael Busch, MD, PhD
