GMOs can be found in many foods eaten in the U.S., but are mostly in ultra-processed foods like hot dogs, chicken nuggets and potato chips. GMO technology can be used to make foods more nutritious, but this isn’t happening yet in the United States and some GMOs contain measurable amounts of herbicides that the World Health Organization has linked to cancer. Scientists are still studying the effect of GMOs on children’s health and more research should be done. But in the meantime, pediatricians can help families make sense of GMO concerns and think through the cost and health impacts of their food choices. Feeding children can be confusing and stressful. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a clinical report advising on the risks associated with #glyphosate residues on #GMfoods. The report highlights #glyphosate as a probable carcinogen and potential endocrine disruptor, and links it to premature births. Despite the lack of long-term studies directly assessing the health effects of GM foods and associated herbicide exposure, the report urges reducing GMO exposure by avoiding corn- and soy-derived ingredients in processed foods. Conservative News Schools, Hospitals Should Avoid Serving GMO Foods to Kids, AAP Says-the Defender A new clinical report issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — the largest professional association of pediatricians in the U.S. — to provide guidance to clinicians in providing pediatric care addresses concerns raised by families about genetically modified (GM) foods. It focuses on the risks of the herbicides sprayed on GM food and feed crops — especially glyphosate. The AAP report authors, three eminent pediatricians, note that glyphosate is a probable carcinogen and may be an endocrine (hormone) disruptor in humans. They also point out the link between high urinary levels of glyphosate in pregnant women with an increased risk of premature births. They add that other herbicides used on GM crops — dicamba and 2,4-D — are “possible” carcinogens, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The authors mention the 2016 report from the National Academy of Sciences, which concluded that there was a lack of evidence of a difference in risk to human health between non-GM and GM crops. However, the authors caution that “the report emphasized that there were no long-term, published epidemiologic studies directly assessing the potential health impact of genetically engineered food and associated herbicide exposure, so conclusions about health were largely made in the absence of available data.” Given all these facts, the authors consider what advice pediatricians can give to families in a climate of public mistrust of GMO foods. The Public’s Concerns and How Scientists Have Addressed Them" for anyone who has doubts about the efficacy and safety of GMO foods. This article comprehensively addresses common concerns about GMOs, including potential toxicity, organ damage, allergic reactions, and gene transfer. It presents evidence from over 100 research studies that compare the effects of traditional and genetically modified foods, demonstrating no significant health risks associated with GMOs. Notably, the article highlights findings from multiple studies where animals fed GMO diets showed no adverse health effects when compared to those fed non-GMO diets. These studies, endorsed by major health organizations such as the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization , support the conclusion that GMOs are safe for consumers. By providing detailed scientific evidence and addressing common misconceptions, Norris's article is an invaluable resource for understanding the safety and benefits of GMO foods. In the article “Glyphosate’s Suppression of Cytochrome P450 Enzymes and Amino Acid Biosynthesis by the Gut Microbiome: Pathways to Modern Diseases †” published in the journal “Entropy”, it states: ““Highly pathogenic strains of Salmonella and Clostridium were found to be highly resistant to glyphosate, whereas beneficial bacteria such as Enterococcus, Bacillus and Lactobacillus were found to be especially susceptible. Due to the antagonistic effect of the common beneficial bacterium Enterococcus spp. on Clostridia, toxicity of glyphosate to E. spp could lead to overgrowth of Clostridia and resulting pathologies.” https://lnkd.in/gm7TcJZA There have been many studies to show that because humans have no Shikimate pathway like plants, that Round Up doesn’t effect human’s health. The issue is that the bacteria in our gut and intestines do have the Shikimate Pathway (2). They are susceptible to the devastating effects of glyphosate (3). In fact, there are now studies showing that the good bacteria in an our gut are more susceptible than most parasites, pathogens and yeasts (3). Research shows that the Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium, Lactobicillus and other health promoting bacteria are highly susceptible to destruction by Round Up (3). The bad bacteria survive fine. Things like Salmonella and Botulism have no problem with glyphosate(3). Since we have introduced genetically modified foods, specifically round up ready corn, into our diet, major disease has increased. Since Glyphosate was introduced to the market in 1990 rates of Liver Cancer, Bladder Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Pelvic Cancer, Thyroid Cancer, Death from Hypertension, and Strokes have risen in tandem (1). How do Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae deal with mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B1?New fully open access paper downloadable here: https://lnkd.in/gMzGvnHy Contamination of food products with mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) poses a severe risk to human health. Larvae of the black soldier fly, can successfully metabolize AFB1 without any negative consequences on their survival or growth. Organic waste streams contaminated with mycotoxins can be upcycled into protein-rich BSF larvae as an alternative feed for livestock (https://lnkd.in/g5fbMXjs) and the left-over feed residue into nutrient-rich crop fertilizers (https://lnkd.in/eZNdcsfG). Here, five-day-old BSF larvae were fed with either a control or an AFB1-spiked diet to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Larval samples were collected at three timepoints and subjected to RNA-Seq analysis to determine gene expression patterns. Provision of an AFB1-spiked diet resulted in an up-regulation of 357 and a down-regulation of 929 unique genes. Upregulated genes include multiple genes involved in AFB1 metabolism in other (insect) species. Downregulated genes were generally involved in the insects’ growth, development, and immunity. BSF larvae possess a diverse genetic arsenal that encodes for enzymes capable of metabolizing AFB1 without trade-offs on larval survival. In conclusion, the adverse impact of AFB1 exposure on immunity-related processes is observed in the transcriptomic response, and is indicative of a trade-off between detoxification and immune responses.
