What makes a good foreperson? Two weeks ago I was given the opportunity to become a foreperson to two long-time assistants in Boliden Harjavalta. This proposition was unexpected since I had no previous experience in that kind of position and have no training as well (if you don't count being a mother to three girls and one with special needs). And since I'm quite bad with saying no (I really need to work with that!), I said yes. 😅 To my luck these two ladies are hard-working professionals. 🙂 Coming back to the first sentence of this post - what makes a good foreperson - I wrote the first things that came into my mind. During my 16 years of work experience (and before that during summer jobs, trainee periods, etc.) I have had many different superiors. First of all I want that my superior really listens to me - and gives me answers! Communication is number one. 👌 You need to give constructive feedback - positive and negative when needed. You need to be able to make decisions whether they are positive or negative ones. You need to be empathetic. Every people have they own struggles and difficulties in life and you need to be able to show some empathy. It is not always possible to say yes to every request but in order to keep the worker you need to be able to show some support and even allowances at times. Whether it is a day off or maybe temporary work arrangements. I really hope that I'm able to fulfill expectations - at least I promise to do my best.
