CERNBox is CERN’s collaboration hub, an integrated platform dedicated to storing, sharing and collaborating on documents and data. The service is used by more than 37K users and stores over 15PB of data. At the CS3 conference, which is being held at #CERN in the framework of #TechWeekStorage24, experts discussed pitfalls and challenges of building such a platform and looked into its future: CERNbox as the gateway for heterogeneous storage spaces at CERN and beyond. The operational launch ceremony of the #OpenQuantumInstitute (OQI) is full speed ahead. Hosted by CERN, born at GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, supported by UBS, the OQI enters its new, three-year pilot phase to help unleash the full power of #quantumcomputing for the benefit of all. Building on the joint effort of some 180 experts to date, the #OQI seeks to facilitate equal access to cutting-edge nascent technologies and to support the development of concrete quantum solutions aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Some of the use-cases include: 🍀 Using quantum computing simulation to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (addressing SDG 13). 🌐 Improving the sustainability of global food systems through quantum computing optimisation (addressing SDG 2, zero hunger). 🏥Finding quantum machine learning solutions to improve medical imaging accuracy, …and more! I am happy to participate in the operational launch ceremony of the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) today, and many congratulations again to all dear colleagues at GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator! Proposed, designed, and incubated through GESDA, in collaboration with some 180 experts from all over the world, the OQI is a multilateral science diplomacy initiative, uniting academia, technology companies, the private sector, the diplomatic community, philanthropy organizations, and global citizens in a joint effort towards more open and inclusive quantum computing. By facilitating equal access to cutting-edge nascent technologies, the OQI seeks to accelerate the potential of quantum computing for all societies and support the development of concrete quantum solutions to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While quantum computing technology is still under development, quantum computers are a complete change of paradigm in the way computation has been practiced so far. This has raised many security concerns, including data security and privacy. The ability of quantum computers to carry out high-speed factorization could crack today's most widely used encryption schemes. As discussed in the workshop today, the key lies in maintaining the potential for innovation while managing risks inherent to the dual-use nature of the technology. In this respect, the Security & Technology Programme (SecTec) at UNIDIR — UN Institute for Disarmament Research hosted a multi-stakeholder dialogue on Quantum Technologies and Their Implications for International Peace and Security with prominent scholars and practitioners on 30 November 2023 (https://lnkd.in/eGEMpEjz) and will prepare for another multi-stakeholder dialogue on quantum this year. I will share more about this in the coming months and hope to discuss this issue again soon. Géraldine Haack, Zhanna L. Malekos Smith, Gaurav Keerthi, Emily Violi Benjamin, Andrea G., Marieke HOOD, M. Muñoz
