As CERN celebrates 70 years of discovery, and it’s a powerful reminder of how science unites nations, did you know the Western Balkan countries were among its founders? Among CERN’s 12 founding members was Yugoslavia, representing a vision for international collaboration and scientific excellence. Although Yugoslavia’s journey at CERN was cut short in 1961 due to political and financial challenges, the countries that emerged after its breakup have made significant strides in re-engaging with this global scientific hub. 🔹 Serbia, rejoining CERN in 2019 as a full member, is a leading example, actively participating in groundbreaking projects and reaping mutual benefits. 🔹 Croatia (now an EU member) continues its collaboration and aims for full membership 🔹 Other countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina are taking steps toward deeper engagement through cooperation agreements. This renewal of ties shows the immense potential of the Western Balkans to contribute to global science. At the Institute for Socioeconomic Development of the Western Balkans (ISED-WB), we believe that science and collaboration are key drivers of peace and progress. 🌸 HANAMI project promoting HPC collaboration between the EU and Japan was successfully kicked off in Paris this week. 🤝 The project brings together European HPC centres, Centres of Excellence and a Japanese consortium to jointly develop climate/weather, biomedical and materials science applications and provide mutual access to extreme-scale supercomputers in both regions. ❄️Supercomputer LUMI plays a crucial role in the project as a platform for benchmarking, measuring and optimizing the scientific applications and the different architectures. 🇪🇺 🇯🇵The project also facilitates exchanges of researchers and experts, and aims to create a roadmap for sustainable future collaboration to enable long-term cooperation between the research communities in Japan and the EU. The project is coordinated by Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives.

[𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭. 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱] 🛰 Slovenia signed an agreement on the basis of which Slovenia will become a full member of European Space Agency - ESA on 1. January 2025. This is an important milestone for Slovenian space industry as well as an achievement for the Ministrstvo za gospodarstvo, turizem in šport / Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport. 🎯 Full membership of the Republic of Slovenia will: 1) Open the door for the 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 in which the Slovenian space sector has not been able to participate so far. These are two programs that represent the core of the ESA: the fundamental technological research program and the scientific program. 2) Enable Slovenian companies to upgrade 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗦𝗔 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 and acquire 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀. 3) Enable equal 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 with other ESA members in adopting 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 4) Increase the 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 as an important player in international space. ℹ More information (in Slovene) 👇 https://lnkd.in/dNEC6wQi

A rise in Asian countries' space capabilities is shaping a new order of competitive international relations in space.

One of the reasons Geographic CCMDs are pulling USSPACECOM and USSF into security cooperation is to counter belt & road initiatives such as the ones highlighted here. Nation states will do what's in thier best interest; the US has to work for the privilege and space is a lever. #usspacecom #ussf

I agree. The competition to cultivate spacepower will continue to shift over the next decades from the toe-dipping coastline of LEO to the vastly expanded volume of cislunar space, and strategists and policymakers must be thinking now about how to seed future strength to seize advantages and ensure American and Allied spacepower continue to lead the world through the end of this century and beyond. #space #strategy #defense #nationalsecurity #spacepower #spaceforce

Transformative changes within defense acqusitions allowed the DAF to become a customer of choice and early adopter for nontraditional companies emerging in the commercial space market. In order to become a "partner of choice," disruptive changes are needed within security cooperation, including new pathways and OSD delegating authorities to services at the field command level. These pathways should include opportunities to collaboratively experiment with partners in new ways with a focus on industry in the global marketplace. The US government has to be the one to make the shift. If we make it difficult for new partners, they will go elsewhere.

Excited to share my latest publication with Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a short analysis of the significance of Peru signing on to the #ArtemisAccords last week. I argue that while the growing number of signatories (42, which may be out of date quite soon!) adds complexities to discussions about implementing the principles of the Accords, it creates an opportunity for regional dialogue across #LatinAmerica. "Beyond celebrating Peru’s signature, the impetus should now be on taking concrete steps to translate high-level principles into implementable measures that open the door to needed progress on the national space governance front, recognizing the 'unique perspective' that stems from economic, social, and political challenges facing the space nations in the region." https://lnkd.in/ek3uPARb
