As 2024 gets underway, we're reflecting on what the past year has taught us and what the future may hold.. 🚚 At the IRU conference last year, government ministers and industry leaders gathered to discuss the future of European Road transport beyond 2040. The conference highlighted that the road transport industry faces a three-fold challenge: designing a model that is sustainable from a climate point of view, fair to its workers, and economically variable. All three are top priorities for Europa, and we wanted to share how we are working towards a greener future for our industry. Across our business we proactively choose energy from renewable sources, our fleet of trucks has the latest low-pollution and high-fuel efficiency Euro 6 engines, plus we are one of the Eurotunnel's largest users to lower our CO2 emissions compared to other transport solutions ♻️ At a Group level, we are one of the first road freight operators to partner with Pledge , a market-leading emissions management platform. Pledge’s platform allows all UK & Ireland and EU customers to measure, report and offset their Scope 3 carbon emissions. Clearly, this is just the start. 🚀Empowering Tomorrow Together: The Impact of Collaboration for Sustainability. Our members Danish Crown and DFDS recently signed a groundbreaking 5-year partnership agreement to accelerate the transition to CO2-neutral transport. ♻️ Building on their existing partnership, DFDS will continue to provide logistics and freight services to the Danish Crown's European operations, including transportation to the UK via DFDS' freight ferries. The partnership will see the deployment of six electric trucks and several electric trailers, contributing to the extensive Nordic network of electric trucks currently being implemented by DFDS. This will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation of goods and help achieve the common goal of becoming more environmentally sustainable. Should we care about what fuels ships use? Yes, because some 90% of traded goods are carried by ships, including the clothes and gadgets we buy online. In this week's #ESG page for The Business Times, I looked into how the shipping industry is faced with a "retrofitting" challenge in its move towards green fuels: https://lnkd.in/gvyRwTQu 🚢 The shipping industry wants to hit net-zero emissions by or around 2050. Switching ships from fossil fuels to "near zero carbon" fuels like methanol and ammonia makes sense 🚢 This could be a new business opportunity for shipyards, to "retrofit" ships that run on marine fuel oils with engines that can use green fuels 🚢 But making that switch isn't actually that easy, with design and cost challenges. News in Sustainable Air Cargo! 🌍✈️ International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Smart Freight Centre (SFC) have joined forces to revolutionize the way we calculate and track CO2 emissions in air cargo shipments. 🤝🌐 As part of the SFC Clean Air Transport Program, this collaboration aims to bring about consistent and transparent CO2 calculations on a global scale. The focus is on enhancing 𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐀'𝐬 𝐂𝐎2 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 platform, ensuring accuracy and uniformity in carbon calculations for the entire air transport sector. 🚚✈️ This initiative promotes a common methodology, making it easier for industry stakeholders, including major shippers and freight forwarders, to access reliable data for pre-shipment and reporting purposes. The ultimate goal? Accelerating global decarbonization efforts within the aviation industry. 🌿🛫 Excitingly, Kuehne+Nagel has stepped up as a pilot customer, playing a crucial role in refining the tool to meet the specific needs of freight forwarders. The agreement to pursue zero emissions for Europe’s new cars and vans by 2035 backed up by strong charging infrastructure and development of alternatives such as rail network, and the sustainable batteries regulation, has set a clear direction and an unequivocal target for sustainable transport measures. However, in order to make the Green transition a reality, and bring its benefits to people, the planet and business, it is vital that we act now. Making the transition to e-mobility must be a priority, not simply to deliver environmental sustainability but also to reinforce the EU’s industrial strength, security and competitiveness. Thanks to our rejuvenated fleet of more efficient new-build vessels, we are sailing towards greener futures with a reduced carbon footprint. 🍃 In 2023, our vessels produced 17% less carbon emissions than in 2022. These vessels are enhanced with voyage optimisation; fuel and speed efficiency; and slow steaming capabilities maintained with closely monitored operations. To meet stringent emissions regulations set by the International Maritime Organization, we comply with oxide emissions standards for our vessels’ engines. Even older vessels have been progressively retrofitted with pollution and carbon abatement technology to ensure our fleet’s eco-friendliness. Our journey towards reducing emissions is a collaborative one. We are actively engaging with several stakeholders to explore sustainability initiatives and solutions, such as sourcing alternative fuels.
