🇦🇲 #Armenia: A new law aims to improve policing of protests. In 2024, as in previous years, several peaceful assemblies were disrupted by police violence and excessive use of force. A recently adopted legislative package aims to tackle challenges by: 🟢 forming a specialised police unit dedicated to maintain public order and safety, equipped and trained according to international standards; 🟢 outlining the specific conditions under which physical force or special equipment can be used against protesters; and 🟢 creating more flexible timelines for notifying authorities about assemblies. The provisions have the potential to strengthen the protection of Armenians' right to peacefully assembly, but the true test lies in how the laws will be implemented.
