Belarusian authorities imposed disproportionate sanctions, such as administrative fines and detentions, on demonstrators for their participation in unauthorized peaceful protests and for sharing news deemed “extremist” by domestic authorities. The UN HRC determined that such restrictions were not justified and did not meet the three-part test to limit the right to freedom of expression under Article 19 of the ICCPR, says Lautaro Furfaro, CGFoE expert. Mozambique is going through one of the darkest periods in its history, where the foundations of the Democratic Rule of Law are systematically being destroyed by authoritarian and repressive practices. Recent episodes of state violence, including killings, brutal repression of peaceful demonstrations, indiscriminate use of force, arbitrary detentions, and the persecution of dissenting voices, highlight a collapse of constitutional principles and international human rights standards. “Peruvians defending their democracy murdered by police.” “Peaceful demonstrations against unelected President Boluarte take a violent turn after being met with unjustified brutality.” “Peruvians’ right to protest and freedom of expression repressed by the state.” These are the headlines that should have been circulating since ex President Castillo’s self-coup in 2022. Even before that. But have you heard about any of the events unfolding in Peru? Despite a growingly interconnected world, it seems difficult to stay up to date on global news, especially when they are not sensationalized in the media. This article wants to bring your attention to a fire that is burning in Peru. One that is being stoked by the state’s unwillingness to listen to its people and attempt to silence voices of resistance. And this article invites you to keep your eyes on Peru and Peruvians’ fight for their democratic rights. #cnddh #derechoalaprotesta #righttoprotest #policebrutality #peruprotesta #peruprotest #sosperu #peruendictadura #maastrichtdiplomat #md #unsa #maastrichtuniversity #journalism #maastrichtuniversity #maastrichtdiplomat #UNSAmaastricht #UNSA #MD #journalism #maastrichtdiplomatpodcast #UM

🇦🇲 #Armenia: A new law aims to improve policing of protests. In 2024, as in previous years, several peaceful assemblies were disrupted by police violence and excessive use of force. A recently adopted legislative package aims to tackle challenges by: 🟢 forming a specialised police unit dedicated to maintain public order and safety, equipped and trained according to international standards; 🟢 outlining the specific conditions under which physical force or special equipment can be used against protesters; and 🟢 creating more flexible timelines for notifying authorities about assemblies. The provisions have the potential to strengthen the protection of Armenians' right to peacefully assembly, but the true test lies in how the laws will be implemented. 🤔Pondering over the strategic intent of Sinophobic narratives. Uhhh, too obvious. The double-standard and high moral pretence of those immoral sponsored Western media have a collective "like-minded" mallicious agenda "to set fires and create chaos" in Hong Kong. Even the #CIA operatives deployed to stir up the protests inciting violence. Since then, #CIA and #Blind #5Eyes shifted major operations to #Japan #Taiwan and the #Philippines. The invisible dark forces - perpetrators the #GlobalApartheidRegime led by the #Supremacist #American still is very much alive today. #USSenators (mainly Republican) now threatened the #ICC and members (effectively also their families) against issuance of arrest notice for those #GazaGenocide #Criminals. Meanwhile, the main country providing the lethal weapons and intelligence to Netanyahu's #GenocideRegime is #USA. #AmericanPeople not proud at all and now doubt who is really in charge of #America. https://lnkd.in/edVYrpng
Contrast between US and HK campus protest is amazing

We are living in truly transformative times, both here in #Georgia and across the globe. While much remains uncertain, one truth stands out: we are witnessing the remarkable emergence of civil society—a process that holds profound significance. For us Georgians, this moment is especially meaningful. Historically, the right to a vibrant, self-determined civil society was curtailed under the weight of imperial rule. Today, as these structures begin to take shape and flourish, it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring pursuit of freedom. This is not just a moment to observe; it is one to celebrate and nurture as we collectively shape a future grounded in shared values and active civic engagement.
This week, the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum gathered Georgian civil society representatives and EU and international organisations to discuss the current crisis in #Georgia. Since the Georgian Dream government's decision to suspend the country's EU integration, protests have been going unabated, reflecting deep public discontent with the ruling Georgian Dream party. The protests have been met with a surge of violent measures, including hundreds of arrests and incidents of police brutality and repression. Civil society and independent media will not be able to continue operating freely in the existing context, and the risk to end up in a Russia-like scenario is extremely high. Civil society therefore asked the EU, its Member States, and international organisations to: 🔴 Impose sanctions on Georgian officials to isolate the Georgian Dream government ⚪️ Meet with civil society and opposition representatives 🔴 Invite civil society and academia instead of Georgian Dream representatives to high-level meetings They also asked that civil society be supported through 🔴 Stronger political and direct financial support ⚪️ Increasing pressure on the Georgian Dream government to release the people who have been arrested 🔴 Continuing support to the individuals who have been charged with criminal and administrative offences and their rehabilitation.
