Milu deer, a species native to the subtropical river valleys of China, almost went extinct in the 20th century due to hunting and habitat loss. Only a few deer transported to Europe survived and were brought back to China in 1985. With huge efforts to rebuild its population, the species has now reached nearly 10,000 in China.
Temminck's red colobus (Piliocolobus badius temminckii), filmed in Bijilo Forest Park with a Canon R6 mkI and Canon 200-600 RF lens during my recent expedition to Gambia. This is an Endangered species, estimated to have undergone a significant decline in the past three decades due to human-induced habitat loss and unsustainable rates of hunting. Already small and isolated Western Red Colobus populations are expected to continue declining given that these threats are ongoing and in most places are not being countered, and indeed are likely to increase, driven by the demand for natural resources from a rapidly growing human population in West Africa.

The American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is one of the largest migratory birds found in North America. They breed in the northern parts of North America, including Canada, and migrate south to warmer areas for the winter. Some populations migrate as far south as Central America. American white pelicans are large birds with a wingspan up to 2.75 meters. They have white plumage overall, with black wingtips that are visible when they are flying. They are primarily found in freshwater habitats, including lakes, marshes, and rivers, particularly in the central and western parts of North America. They prefer shallow water bodies where they can forage for fish. American white pelicans primarily feed on fish. They often forage in groups, using cooperative hunting strategies to corral fish into shallow water where they can easily scoop them up with their bills.

An overlooked area for deer hunters to hunt is fallow fields or wet areas that are grown-up with tall weeds and bushes that are tall enough to hide deer. Much of these lands were once farm fields that are now Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land that provides 27 million acres of wildlife habitat to be raised as fallow fields instead of being farmed by America’s farmers. The hey-day of CRP acreage was between 1985 to 2014, when there were 37 million acres enrolled in the CRP program. 10 million more acres than we have today. And this habitat benefits not only deer, but upland game birds, songbirds, butterflies, endangered species, and pretty much every other sort of wildlife out there. Two pairs of Himalayan gorals were released into the wild, in Singalila National Park (India). This release is part of a conservation translocation programme led by Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park that aims to reinforce the declining wild populations of this species.
