PGMs - principally platinum and palladium - face a long-term structural decline in demand as their main use has been to clean auto exhausts, a process that is not needed in pure EVs. A few years ago, the prospects for PGMs, and producers such as Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum and Sibanye Stillwater, appeared grim as EV sales soared and the drop-off in demand was expected to be steep. "You're still facing an outright demand decline, but there's not an immediate collapse, which could have been the projection in some (previous) scenarios," said Marcus Garvey, head of commodities strategy at Macquarie Bank in Singapore. The increase in sales of pure EVs globally in the first half of 2024 slowed to 11% year-on-year, while plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales jumped 44%, according to consultancy Rho Motion. For EVs, the figures are a big fall-off from two years ago when sales rocketed 77%. The rise of hybrids could last until 2030 or longer, extending the period when PGMs are needed, analysts said. "The shift to hybridisation could be quite meaningful for the longer-term sustainability of the PGM industry," said Wilma Swarts, director of PGMs at consultancy Metals Focus. Giga Metals CEO Mark Jarvis tells Proactive's Angela Harmantas that the company possesses one of the world's largest deposits of sulphide nickel and cobalt, crucial for battery chemistry in electric vehicles (EVs). Speaking to Proactive at PDAC 2024, Jarvis said the company's focus is on producing environmentally friendly nickel, addressing the automotive industry's demand for clean raw materials, particularly from European carmakers. The Turnagain Nickely project in British Columbia is Giga Metals' flagship, highlighted by its pre-feasibility study revealing 35,000 tonnes per year of nickel and 2,000 tonnes per year of cobalt over a 30-year mine life. This is based on 950 million tonnes of reserves, part of larger indicated and inferred resources suggesting potential for a 100-year mine life. Looks like we have more movement on the direct lithium extraction (DLE) front! International Battery Metals Ltd. signed a term sheet for the deployment of one of their modular DLE plants with someone in the United States. Initial production is planned at 4,000 tpa LCE, with the goal to increase it to 8,000 tpa. They claim this will be the first commercial DLE operation in North America.
