One of the largest IT outages in the world is happening right now. It likely stems from a software update to Microsoft Windows via its third party cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike. This moment shines a light on how reliant our world is on cyber and IT infrastructure. There is so much focus on the front end capabilities of technologies. But equally as important is the safety and security of the cyber infrastructure that power those technologies. This should be a wake up call to businesses keen to deploy AI yet sidelining cyber investment. They go hand in hand.

I think this may serve as the first wake up call to people who really do not take the importance of contingency planning and business continuity planning seriously. Does your business have manual processes in place as emergency operations backups ? If not, todays world-wide outage should make the point why this is critical to have in place clear.

The IT outage last week is a prime example of the type of risk that should be addressed in a business' Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program. Two disciplines within ERM, namely (i) risk management (implementing policy, controls, monitoring, training) and (ii) business continuity planning will improve your company's resilience. ERM is good governance, and just good business.

Another cyberattack, this time a DDoS attack, has caused a new outage in Microfost Azure service, DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. It is a type of cyber attack where multiple compromised systems, often infected with malware, are used to target a single system, causing a denial of service for users of the targeted system. DDOs is easy to understand but executing a large-scale, effective one is quite complex, this attack requires significant resources, including: - A large botnet of compromised devices. - Sophisticated software to coordinate the attack. - Technical expertise to evade detection and mitigation measures. The flood of incoming messages, connection requests, or malformed packets to the target system forces it to slow down or crash, thereby denying service to legitimate users. Image Source: Forbes
