Have you heard of THE NASEM REPORT? For many decades, the complexities of nursing home care not being adequately addressed as a whole has led to a complicated system (including policies) with short falls. Then came along COVID-19, which has exposed these shortfalls and has brought renewed attention for the need to ensure residents' well-being and safety. Nursing homes are important parts of society and local communities. With more and more of us and our family members, neighbors and friends needing every day care that is not possible at home, nursing homes hold a unique position in the long-term care continuum too – acting both as healthcare providers and a home to residents. In response to the #pandemic, the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine formed the Committee on the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes. The result? A report published in 2022: "The National Imperative to Improve Nursing Home Quality: Honoring Our Commitment to Residents, Families, and Staff." The report identifies 7 broad goals and the types of needed changes to enhance the quality of care in nursing homes. 🌟 This comprehensive framework serves as a call to action, urging a collective effort AND was the starting point for the Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition (or, Moving Forward). 🚀 Our Coalition's Commitment: We're dedicated to turning these broad recommendations into tangible changes. In fact, we've outlined our 9 Action Plans to tackle game-changing, practical projects that can improve conditions for residents and staff. It is scientifically proven that maintaining a standard norm of a general nurse/patients ratio significantly improves the quality of patient's care as well as nurses' well-being. The remaining question is: how can hospitals achieve this ratio? What shuld be done, and how should it be implemented? The 2019 belgian KCE report on hospital staffing recommends investing in Nurses' education as a matter of urgency. However, it is crucial for POLITICIANS not to confuse General Nursing education with other nursing assimulated professions such as assistant-nurses ... Very importantly, in Belgium, We need an independant Nursing regulatory organ responsible for overseeing the nursing profession in its entirety.
Amazing study !! Patients had significantly lower odds of dying if they attended hospitals with more favorable patient-to-RN ratios, higher proportions of bachelors-qualified RNs, better nurse work environments, and were Magnet recognized preceding the first U.S. wave of Covid-19 and during the pandemic 😷

📢 Calling all healthcare professionals and industry leaders! 🏥 Did you know that skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) continue to operate and accept new patients even on weekends? 🌟 In an era where many services have limited availability during weekends, it's vital to recognize the importance of SNFs staying open and accessible to admissions throughout the entire week. Let's explore why this is such a crucial aspect of healthcare provision. 1️⃣ Continuity of Care: Medical emergencies and unexpected events don't adhere to a Monday to Friday schedule. By keeping SNFs open for admissions over the weekend, patients in need of specialized care or transitioning from a hospital setting can seamlessly access the services they require. This ensures a smooth continuum of care, reducing the risk of complications and improving overall patient outcomes. 2️⃣ Timely Rehabilitation: Many SNFs offer comprehensive rehabilitation programs aimed at helping patients recover and regain their independence. By accepting new patients over the weekend, individuals can start their rehabilitation journey without unnecessary delays. Early intervention is often key to successful recovery, so maintaining weekend admissions allows for prompt assessments and personalized treatment plans. 3️⃣ Reducing Hospital Overcrowding: SNFs play a crucial role in alleviating the strain on hospitals and emergency departments. By accepting new patients over the weekend, SNFs can help prevent unnecessary hospital admissions or facilitate timely discharges. This not only frees up much-needed resources for acute care facilities but also ensures that patients receive appropriate, specialized care in the most suitable setting. 4️⃣ Support for Families: Weekend admissions in SNFs offer peace of mind to families and caregivers who may need assistance in arranging care for their loved ones during non-business hours. Having the option to admit a family member into a skilled nursing facility over the weekend provides much-needed support and respite, enabling families to manage their responsibilities effectively. Let's celebrate the dedication and commitment of skilled nursing facilities that remain open for admissions throughout the week, including weekends. Their unwavering commitment to patient care, even during off-peak hours, showcases their passion for improving lives and ensuring access to quality healthcare services. If you work in a skilled nursing facility or have experienced the benefits of weekend admissions firsthand, I'd love to hear your insights and stories. Together, let's continue to advocate for accessible and comprehensive care, 24/7. 🌈💙 #HealthcareHeroes #SkilledNursingFacilities #WeekendAdmissions #ContinuityOfCare #PatientOutcomes #LinkedIn

📢 Attention healthcare professionals and caregivers! 🏥 ⚠️ Did you know that prematurely discharging patients from skilled nursing facilities before the end of their authorized stay can have detrimental effects, including an increased risk of rehospitalization? ⚠️ 🔍 It's crucial to understand the potential dangers associated with early discharges and the impact they can have on patients' well-being. Here are a few reasons why: 1️⃣ Incomplete Recovery: Skilled nursing facilities provide essential rehabilitative services, allowing patients to regain strength and independence. Cutting short their stay may hinder their progress and lead to incomplete recovery. 2️⃣ Lack of Support: Discharging patients before the recommended timeframe often means they won't have access to necessary medical support and supervision. This can result in complications, setbacks, and the need for readmission to the hospital. 3️⃣ Medication Management: Proper medication management is crucial for a successful recovery. Premature discharges may disrupt this process, leading to medication errors, missed doses, or incorrect administration, jeopardizing patient safety. 4️⃣ Transitional Challenges: Adequate planning and preparation are vital for a smooth transition from skilled nursing to home or another care setting. Rushing the discharge process can increase the risk of complications, confusion, and the need for emergency readmission. 💡 So, what can we do to address this issue? 1️⃣ Educate: Raise awareness among healthcare providers, caregivers, and patients about the potential risks associated with premature discharges and the importance of completing the authorized stay. 2️⃣ Collaborate: Foster open communication and collaboration between hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and community care providers to ensure a seamless transition and continuity of care. 3️⃣ Follow Guidelines: Adhere to established guidelines and discharge protocols to ensure patients receive the full benefit of their authorized stay and minimize the risk of rehospitalization. 🤝 Together, let's prioritize patient safety and well-being by advocating for appropriate and timely discharges from skilled nursing facilities. By doing so, we can help prevent avoidable rehospitalizations and support patients on their journey to recovery. 🔁 If you agree that premature discharges can be dangerous and contribute to rehospitalization, please like, comment, and share this post to spread awareness among your professional network. Let's make a difference together! 🌟 #PatientSafety #SkilledNursing #DischargePlanning #ContinuityOfCare #Re
