We’re closely tracking developments surrounding HUD's nursing home mortgage insurance program. Our belief is that the program can be a powerful driver of nursing home innovation. Unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of General Counsel may have something else in mind. McKnight's Senior Living reports that the Office circulated a legal opinion stating “that the current Section 232 handbook guidelines and program regulations that allow for non-critical repairs to be mortgageable costs conflict with the National Housing Act.” To make the changes in nursing home environments residents need, "non-critical repairs" will be vital. Does CMS currently delegate too much authority over certification to individual states? 💡 Check out their argument and evidence in a new Special Report by toby edelman: https://lnkd.in/e88GgzqT State licensure agencies are overwhelmed by rapid nursing home ownership turnover. Even in states with the ability to deny licenses for new operators, agency staff often lack the bandwidth, resources, or expertise to effectively review ownership and quality data. We're excited to announce that our Strengthening Resident Councils pilot project will focus on the state of #Connecticut The goal of the project is to scale and spread a guide and process for strengthening resident councils in all nursing homes in at least one state. You can learn more from the project team leader, Mairead Painter, Connecticut's State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, here: https://lnkd.in/eXg_zaPX We spoke with leaders in states across the country to learn about their interest and ability to support the project; we were thrilled to hear so much enthusiasm about resident councils and other approaches to empowering residents in their communities. Ultimately, Connecticut stood out for its diversity of engaged stakeholders (including nursing home associations and the state’s Executive Board of Presidents of Resident Councils) and opportunities to work with diverse nursing homes at a manageable scale (a geographically small state with 233 nursing homes). Connecticut nursing homes providers as a whole have proven to be national leaders in embracing resident councils and supporting initiatives to empower them further. We're excited to work closely with these providers over the coming three years. "There's a tendency to view resident councils as supplementary to nursing home operations. November 5 is Election Day. For nursing home residents, voting may be more difficult and complicated than for other community members. But it is nonetheless their RIGHT! Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality seeks nursing homes to participate in a pilot test of an update to the Surveys on Patient Safety Culture® (SOPS®) Nursing Home Survey (Version 2.0) with supplemental items assessing staff workplace safety. The 2.0 survey is shorter than the current 1.0 survey and includes revised and new items based on user feedback.   Participating nursing homes will receive: 💲 Up to $1,000: $500 for participation, and an additional $500 for sites that achieve at least a 50 percent response rate. ✏ Free survey administration to nursing home staff of the 2.0 survey with workplace safety supplemental items in Aug./Sept. 2024. 💡 Feedback reports comparing their results to other pilot sites.   To express interest in participating, or to learn more, email NursingHomeSurvey@westat.com. #MovingForward #PatientSafety #NursingHome
