The USS Boxer should be a case study for all future Surface Warfare Officers, prospective COs, XOs and Chengs. This was a ship that was devoid of Leadership, Accountability and Maintenance. As our Fleet retires ships, some before their expected service life and shipyards struggle to put new platforms and hulls in the water, it’s critical to elevate our current ships readiness. Without ships ready and able to deploy on schedule, we leave a void in our presence across the seas and stretch the material readiness of ships and their crews already deployed. At a time when our Navy is challenged around the world, it is essential that our Ships and Crews are ready to execute the orders of the National Command Authority whenever and wherever needed. For me, it’s a matter of Leadership, Accountability and War Fighting capability… let’s turn the ship into the wind and make the deck ready to launch and recover aircraft! The United States Marine Corps' new landing ship is facing significant delays and cost overruns. The US Navy's landing ship medium program, which aims to procure 35 ships, is now expected to award the design and construction contract 2 years later than planned, in fiscal year 2025. The original estimate for the 18-ship program was $2.6 billion, or $150 million per ship. But the Congressional Budget Office now estimates the cost could be between $6.2-$7.8 billion, or $340-$430 million per ship - nearly triple the original estimate. The delay and cost overruns are a setback for the Marines, who need this new ship to support their recently formed Marine littoral regiments and maneuver closer to shore, especially in the Pacific region. Good morning and welcome 2024! New Year’s resolutions are on my mind today, but I am approaching it differently. In the past, I would think of all of these wild and brilliant ideas and then either fall flat on my face or shrug it off within a month’s time. The realization of not succeeding irked me. Today, my thought process of coming up with my New Year’s resolution or resolutions will be different. After my list of items are written, I will ask the big question “Is this attainable?”. Is is so common for us to come up with New Year’s resolutions like jumping over a cliff into water 50 feet below. They are generally emotional decisions. We start, realize we can’t keep up the momentum, and then quit. Then self-defeat is felt. The beautiful thing about New Year’s resolutions is that you own them. In addition, they are malable rather than set in stone. For example, you may want to start working out again. Rather than claiming you will work out 5 days per week, set your goal for 1 or 2 days per week. Once you have consistently achieved it and you know more days per week is attainable, adjust your goal. Not only will you be meeting your goal, you will also adjust for more success rather than giving up. Small moves have great impact. I watched the video below and loved what Ray said about making decisions that will make a positive impact on our life. Remember, you are not being selfish. Those around us are positively impacted as well.

After an exhaustive work that includes underwater surveys and detailed structural analysis of the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s collapse, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects to open a limited access channel by the end of April. This temporary channel will measure 280 feet wide and 35 feet deep, supporting one-way traffic for the transport of automobiles and farm equipment in and out of the port.   The permanent reopening of the 700-foot-wide by 50-feet-deep Fort McHenry Channel is expected by the end of May. This would lead to the restoration of port access to normal capacity.   Understandably, this timeline is subject to weather conditions as well as unforeseen difficulties of the cleaning efforts.
