Oakland County, Michigan Government has launched a program called Oakland SAVES, which aims to improve the energy efficiency of homes and reduce energy costs for income-qualified households. This $5 million initiative will be administered by Michigan Saves, the first nonprofit green bank in the US. The goal of the program is to make at least 1,000 homes in Oakland County more energy efficient, benefiting working families and the environment. Don't blindly create a strategic plan without gathering input from your community! It's crucial to engage residents and the board to test assumptions about your community’s strengths and challenges, and to identify immediate and future priorities. Consider conducting a survey among your residents at least every two years and adding funds to your community budget for this purpose. Reflecting on the journey of Cash for Trash fills me with pride and inspiration. During my tenure in the Mayor's Office, I had the privilege of contributing to launching and developing a program that has significantly impacted our community. The case study featured in the World Cities Magazine highlights the program's success in improving sanitation at homeless encampments and enhancing overall community cleanliness. In just ten months since its launch, 294 unsheltered residents actively participated, removing over 243 tons of trash from 22 locations. The program's success led to the allocation of additional funds by former Mayor Liccardo in March 2021. This decision facilitated the expansion of Cash for Trash to serve 500 unsheltered residents, with plans for creating further incentives to encourage the housing insecure to access government services. Today, Cash for Trash continues to thrive under its current management, exemplifying the efficacy of well-designed, community-driven initiatives. This success is a testament to the impact that strategic programs can have on social issues. Beyond the physical cleanup, our collective efforts have restored dignity, fostered hope, and initiated positive change within our community. My gratitude extends to the collaborative efforts of all involved in this transformative initiative. Do you know anyone in Park or Warley (Halifax) who is already doing great stuff to tackle the climate emergency and wants to do more? Or someone who would like to if they could get their hands on some cash? The Community Grants for Climate Action Fund is an initiative from Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin, co-ordinated by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Administered locally by Calderdale Council and Community Foundation for Calderdale, grants of between £5,000 and £50,000 are available to deliver projects that help the Park and Warley areas of the borough to become greener and more resilient to climate change. This fund is focused on salary costs and associated expenses (rather than capital expenditure) to increase knowledge of and engagement in climate action in the area. Projects that could benefit from funding include those that help to increase knowledge of climate change and its local impacts, as well as putting advice and support in place to help more residents take climate action. Deadline for applications is Monday 11 December. The federal government will invest more than $25 billion in the New England region on infrastructure, environmental and clean energy projects over the next few years. How can funders, governments and communities ensure funding is invested where it’s most needed? That was the question on everyone’s mind at the New England Thriving Communities convening in Providence, RI, on Oct. 16 & 17. The gathering brought together more than 200 local community leaders and representatives from federal, state and local government and funders to coordinate and ideate ways they can work together to unlock federal funding for frontline communities in New England. Funders in the region already engaged in this work include the Barr Foundation, Partnership for Rhode Island, ELMINA B SEWALL FOUNDATION, Merck Family Fund, Maine Community Foundation, GRASSROOTS of New England and many others – all working to help communities have a greater voice, access and capacity to influence where funds are invested.
