All streaming TV is becoming "mid-TV", categorised by high production values but unsophisticated plots. This is interesting in the context of the evolution of "taste". The blurring of high and low culture is a long-term trend. In mid-TV, we arguably see an end point, where the production values from high cultural TV are combined with the plotting of low cultural TV. But do TV execs underplay the role that "distinction" plays in people's lives? The concept of taste remains important for people distinguishing themselves from others, yet the markers of taste are being eroded. #semiotics #tv https://lnkd.in/eCVWzbK2

Anton Savage: Think public service broadcasting needs public money? Think again. The American broadcaster Edward R Murrow never received a cent of taxpayers’ money, but still provided a masterclass in quality journalism. Donald Trump’s trial for interfering with an election by paying an adult actress to stay quiet about his tryst with her has a lesson in it for RTÉ. In fact it has a lesson for all public service broadcasting. In recent times public service broadcasting has – thanks to RTÉ drawing vast attention to its own funding, and the collapse of same – become synonymous with publicly funded broadcasting. They are different things, and it’s a fallacy to assume public service requires public funding. Read Anton Savage's full article on how broadcasting can thrive without taxpayer money. 👇

Do you enjoy inclusive and non-judgmental journalism? Consider supporting Playful TV. With over three million unique views since we launched Playful TV four months ago, the income from ads on YouTube is minimal. This is because we cover topics that fall outside the norm, such as sexuality, underground culture, and other subjects deemed "controversial" by major platforms. At the same time, we are not more controversial than Vice, LadBible, or other major lifestyle channels – in fact, we're less sensational, more open, and honest – at least that's what we strive for. Fortunately, there are solutions that allow us to release longer, uncensored versions for our paid subscribers. We are now on Ghost, a platform supporting independent mendia, and for a small monthly fee, you enable us to continue developing Playful TV. Ultimately, I am convinced that together we are making the world a bit more playful. And that is truly needed. Thank you! https://lnkd.in/ePuhNuEx
