All streaming TV is becoming "mid-TV", categorised by high production values but unsophisticated plots. This is interesting in the context of the evolution of "taste". The blurring of high and low culture is a long-term trend. In mid-TV, we arguably see an end point, where the production values from high cultural TV are combined with the plotting of low cultural TV. But do TV execs underplay the role that "distinction" plays in people's lives? The concept of taste remains important for people distinguishing themselves from others, yet the markers of taste are being eroded. #semiotics #tv https://lnkd.in/eCVWzbK2

A new industry report has confirmed that the power structure in television is rapidly changing where legacy media, once all-powerful players in an industry defined by themselves, are now quickly facing an existential crisis and scrambling for survival and any relevancy. TV anchors that present current affairs programmes make it seem simple! Last week I had the privilege of hosting a 90-minute live corporate TV broadcast, including two panel discussions. It was fun and exciting, but definitely not as easy as it looks. It’s more difficult to engage with a camera than a live audience and the ability to remain calm, confident and create a sense energy was especially important. Like most things, good preparation and having a great team to work with created a successful outcome and a fun experience. #communication #presenting #teamwork

Visually Summarizing Television News Broadcasts Through Thumbnails: Algorithmic Vs Time-Based Experiments: Part 2 Continuing our experiments creating representative thumbnails of a television news broadcast, let's look at how the two approaches (time-based fixed sampling vs algorithmic sampling) work on a few more broadcasts. Here we see that the fixed sampling strategy incorporates "upcoming broadcasts" preview clips and excessive advertisement clips, whereas the algorithmic sampler remarkably excludes them. https://lnkd.in/ejswPQpw
