There are various types of competitions, such as the one to be held in London on October 2nd during Caffe Culture, organized by the European Speciality Tea Association (European Tea Society). Participants are presented with 5 sets, each consisting of 3 cups. In these cups, 2 contain the same tea, while 1 contains a different tea. The goal is to identify the different tea in each set. The more you recognize, the better your chances of winning. And this year Teatips will be there! Almost 20 Million Extra Pints Expected To Be Enjoyed During The Euros On the eve of the European Championships kicking off tonight, Friday 14 June with Germany versus Scotland (with Serbia versus England two days later on Sunday 16 June), new figures from the British Beer and Pub Association show that almost 20 million extra pints are expected to be sold and enjoyed during the tournament which is to the value of over £93 million in extra sales. Total sales across the 4 weeks of the Euros 298,833,559 - £1,434,401,082 Which includes an uplift of 19,548,061 - £93,830,695 This means that across the month of the tournament, the BBPA expects today pint sales of just over £1.4 billion (including the £93 million uplift), representing almost 300 million pints being sold (including the extra £19.5 million). Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association “Football fans know that the best place to watch live sport, if you can’t be in the stadium itself, is down the pub. Whether you are supporting England or Scotland or cheering on another team, there can be no better place to watch the Euros and sharing a few refreshing beers than with friends than in your local. It is a stark fact that UK pub goers will be paying the highest beer duty than any of the other competing nations in the Euros, including twelve times more then German and Spanish rates. However, with a predicted extra 20 million pints set to be poured during the tournament, worth an extra £93 million in sales, I encourage anyone wanting to watch the football to go to the pub and support their local.” The BBPA has also designed and published the definitive Euros wallchart which also contrasts the different beer duty rates across the different competing nations. Euro’24 success for the Dutch and Belgium …..... leading brewers Although it feels to me that the summer has not yet started, we have come to the end of the European Championships football. For brewers the weather in Northern Europe could have been slightly better, but at least the results on the pitch generally went the right way. We looked at publicly available data from the Oxford Partnership about the number of pints sold in UK pubs during match days, as well as at comments from UK retailers about sales leading up to yesterday’s game, and extrapolated this to overall beer volumes. The effect on countries playing three games at the group stages is a 0.25% volume increase for 2024 (just shy of an extra trading day). Making progress throughout the knock-out stages adds a further 0.09%, 0.17%, 0.24% and eventually 0.54% for reaching the final. When we multiply beer consumption in the 24 participating countries with these percentages, we calculate an additional beer volume of 225 million litres. In the most ideal scenario (which includes a Germany – Spain final), volumes would have increased by 260 million litres, while in a worst scenario for the beer industry (and an Albania – Georgia final), volumes would have grown by only 100 million litres. When we look at individual brewers (and assume stable market shares), Heineken comes out on top, followed by AB InBev and Mahou-San Miguel. For Heineken, the final was between two of its largest EURO’24 countries. Only drawback was that its no.1 market by volume, Poland, got eliminated at the group stages. AB InBev benefitted from the strong performance of England, which helped them leapfrog some larger European competitors. For Mahou San-Miguel (and its slightly smaller compatriot Damm) the tournament could not have gone any better. Apart from the actual result on the pitch, these companies also celebrated that the final was contested between their two largest beer markets. Friday Fun with Ringa Hora: The Strategy and Advice team held their highly anticipated Biscuit Championships this week  🍪 🏆 🎉    With initial confusion over the rules and a scandal around invitations, controversy also arose regarding regulation adherence. However, logistical issues due to the event being held simultaneously in two different locations were quickly solved, and the comps were ultimately a success.     Highly motivated by anything food related, the S&A team each contributed a packet of their favourite biscuits, which were sampled and meticulously judged on appearance, aroma, flavour, and originality. No biscuit or brand name bias was involved, with all packaging removed.     The official winner at the Pōneke office was the Spanders Toffee Biscuits, submitted by Rhiannon. These high-end, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits took out the top spot with their blend of buttery toffee. “They are the best by far,” said one of the top tasters.     Jeff’s relentless campaign for sultana pasties once again proved fruitless, coming in last – even scoring a zero overall by one of the taste testers, who shall remain nameless.     In a controversial turn of events, the title of the tastiest biscuit at the Tamaki office was claimed by the Orange Jaffa Cakes, submitted by Lucy.     I know what you're thinking. Are Orange Jaffa Cakes considered biscuits or cakes? Are they even located in the biscuit aisle? However, the spirit of inclusivity was embraced, and we allowed these treats to compete. Guinness Six Nations Lifts 2024 Draught Beer & Cider Sales Pre-tournament favourites, France and Ireland, kicked off the 2024 Guinness Six Nations in some style – with Ireland claiming a historic win. In other games, England achieved the narrowest of wins against Italy. And Scotland, having romped to a 27 point lead, survived an incredible 26 point second half Welsh comeback by a solitary point. Off the pitch, draught beer and cider sales were -7.3% over the Friday to Sunday vs. 2023, although this comparison isn’t strictly fair as we see games on Friday & Saturday in 2024 vs. Saturday & Sunday in 2023. The positive news is that the weekend drove +6.6% increase in sales vs. the other weekends in 2024 so far. Turning to category performance, the big winners over the weekend were the more traditional winter drinks (Stout & Ale). Stout is the biggest winner and is driving category growth +7.5%. 2024 also sees the Premiumisation trend continuing unabated with World Lager overtaking Core Lage as the bigger category. The biggest categories to lose out are Premium Lager -15.1% and Core Lager -13.8%. Average consumer dwell time grew at a total level to 134 mins vs. 131 mins in the same week last year (+2.3%) with City Centres driving the highest growth +2.3%. With all locations benefitting from an increased consumer visit length vs. 2023, with Suburbia outlets +1.5% whilst Rural saw a marginal increase +0.8%. Meanwhile, footfall is declining in line with volume -3.3% vs. 2023 driven by a strong decline on Saturday. Suburbia was worst affected with poor weather & the cost of living keeping consumers at home. City Centres were also badly affected by the ongoing rail strikes. The sporting occasion plays a key part in On Premise consumption in both live sports viewing in venues and actual Stadium consumption with a strong product-market fit for beer. Additionally, in times of uncertainty, consumers flock to quality and trusted brands to reduce risk in choice and provide known value.
