Jamie Sabbach's most recent article was published in this month's issue of Parks & Rec Business magazine, which as of January 5th is now PRB+! In "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Have...", Jamie shares powerful excerpts from a letter she penned to her local city council as they attempt to balance the demand from local special interest groups with the priorities of the greater community. Whether this if your first time reading this piece, originally shared on our website last August, or if you're interested in checking it out again in PRB+, "While reading, consider the ice rink as a metaphor. It may be a recreation center, more sports fields, a pickleball complex, etc. And while each of these may be considered nice to have, ask the real questions: What is affordable? Should investments in amenities trump the imposing interests and issues that affect the greater good? Where should government’s reach end?" Check out the article here: https://lnkd.in/gdXkDmmD

The planning for the Brisbane Olympics has embodied numerous qualities in its short and unhappy life to date, including delusion, indolence, disorganisation and ineptitude. Now we can add electioneering, short-termism and stinginess. We started with a $1 billion 'plan' to demolish and rebuild the Gabba - a kind of back-of-the-napkin scribbling that would have made Stephen Conroy blush, and one that lacked even the most remote connection to an understanding of stadium builds or construction costs. That predictably blew out to $2.7 billion (you could fund almost half of a Commonwealth Games in Victoria for that!), and so the Premier commissioned an independent review. Shockingly, it appears that Steven Miles is not a Yes Minister fan, for if he was he would know that you never commission a review that you don't already know the outcome of. He has gone one better though, and after learning he was not going to get an answer he liked, got a huddle of public servants together, grabbed some more napkins and came up with a plan to spend $1.6 billion to upgrade a stadium 12 kms from the CBD with no transport links and no connection with the government and council's signature Cross River Rail and Metro projects. Apparently Queenslanders 'won't cop' paying $3 billion for a new stadium during a cost of living crisis, but presumably will cop spending over half that for a single-use white elephant in the middle of nowhere, that offers zero games legacy and no modern stadium for Cricket and AFL in the future. Talk about knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

How the Hamilton2030 Commonwealth Games bid inspired Community Regeneration. Things are quiet now. Everything is in transition. Doubts and questions remain, about, well, everything. But something notable happened today in the City Of Hamilton. The start of something significant. While the dream of bringing the 2030 Commonwealth Games home for its centenary may be in abeyance, the vision of a movement of community stakeholders united around the goal of transformation and regeneration remains. And has witnessed new life today in the launch of an initiative inspired by the Commonwealth Sporting movement. Not surprisingly, it is called: "The Commons". The Commons is an initiative of local stakeholders redeveloping the city's key entertainment assets - those that would be central to any Commonwealth Games - and leveraging the effort to promote regeneration and revitalization throughout the community. The themes, values and ambitions of the Gaming movement have now manifest in the private sector's resolve to bring change directly and immediately to this city through infrastructure and compelling new programming - at its expense. This is what the Games movement can and has inspired. Whether or not the Games ever come back here. That flame burns brightly in all of us. And will not extinguish. Whether you are from Hamilton or not, we invite you to keep the Games dream alive by engaging and following the Commons initiative at the link below.
