Neuro-affirming Paediatric Speech & Language Therapist working Independently and in the NHS

Can’t quite believe it but it’s my first day of SALT independent practice tomorrow! The relationship between independent and NHS Speech and Language Therapists (in my own experiences) have been nothing short of amazing opportunities to learn, network and collaborate. I’ve been interested in dipping my toes into some independent work as I believe people have a right to choose what and how they access different services. It also helps I’ll be working along side the loveliest team I couldn’t say no to!! Any tips advice for navigating the differences between NHS work and independent work?! #SpeechAndLanguageTherapy #SALT #independentSLT #NHSSLT #independentpractice

My main observation when we move from NHS to independent work is that there can be an element of being institutionalised in our thinking. I found it really helpful to question myself about my actions to make sure I was making decisions based entirely on a child’s needs as opposed to habits I’d developed from working within very limited resources. Maintaining a good relationship with NHS colleagues and working as collaboratively as possible, despite perhaps working differently has also been essential. Good luck - independent practice is a really rewarding way of working!
