Hello! I work at DESE Crew Management , a crewing company. My role involves searching for and selecting seafarers for vacancies provided by shipowners. Every day, I receive messages and CVs from seafarers across various countries. They reach out to me via LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, and Email. In this article, I aim to assist seafarers in making a positive impression when submitting their CVs. When I receive a new CV, the first thing I look at is the maritime specialty of the candidate. Unfortunately, not all CVs clearly state the position the seafarer is applying for. This often requires me to scroll through the CV and deduce their most recent role from their work experience. Next, I need to know the candidate’s age and nationality. These criteria are specified by shipowner companies for valid reasons. The safety of the seafarer during a voyage is paramount. The shipowner strives to create a safe environment for the entire crew and the company. If you don’t meet one of these criteria for shipowner “A”, you may well be suitable for shipowners “B”, “C”, “D”, etc. That’s why your CV is saived by the crewing company. Even shipowner “A” may change their criteria tomorrow, perhaps due to a change in their vessel’s sailing area. It’s also crucial that you provide the current dates of your maritime documents. There are instances where a seafarer updates their documents but sends a CV with outdated dates. Such CVs cannot be forwarded to shipowners. We want our seafarers to be liked and approved. The most important aspect for us in your CV is your work experience. Here’s what we want to see immediately: Rank Ship Name Ship Type Deadweight (not Gross Tonnage!) For engineers, the Type of Main Engine Contract Dates Shipowner’s Company Also, please attach a high-quality photo of yourself in a white shirt or naval uniform, similar to what you would submit for maritime documents. Avoid using bright colors and it’s best not to color your CV at all. Please send it in .pdf format. If you don’t have a CV template, you can use one from any seafarer website. I personally like the CV structure from the Maritime Zone website. If you don’t receive a call or email from the company immediately, feel free to remind us via WhatsApp or Telegram. Often, this is because there isn’t a suitable vacancy for you at the moment. However, you are already in our CV database and will be contacted as soon as new vacancies arise. Trust me, crewing operators and managers will be delighted to place you with a reputable shipowner. We are on your side!

Over the past 7.5 years of consulting with Ship Managers and Owners regarding shore-based positions, I've observed multiple struggles in filling these roles. Some of these challenges come up repeatedly... Others are a little more niche... "Full relocation for you, your partner and the kids to a war-torn in-hospitable country? Don't worry though, they provide a private chef in the secure compound!" However... There are three issues in today's market that I think can be resolved easier than the rest that will have the largest impact... the most bang for your buck if you will. Shortage of Qualified Candidates: Ship Managers and Owners are finding it difficult to find professionals with the right skills for shore-based roles. These positions require a unique mix of maritime knowledge, technical expertise, and management skills, which are in short supply. Good thing I have spent 7.5 years understanding this skill set and focusing on my Network around this area specifically. ***If everyone who reads this: Likes, Comments, Shares and Connects with me I will have 15K Connections by the end of the week and can support more people like you in the future*** Sometimes being a jack of all trades can be useful, but when it comes to being a recruiter in the maritime industry the more specific you are the better. Choose Wisely Evolving Work Preferences: It used to be the younger generations entering the workforce that we thought had different priorities compared to previous ones. This is firmly NOT the case anymore. Your company doesn't offer Hybrid working from home? That's a pity because you just shut yourself off from a huge majority of the relevant talent pool. Forget about hiring the best person for the job, you'll be lucky to hire anyone. People prioritize factors like work-life balance, career growth, and workplace culture. You should as well. Wages and Benefits: Companies are struggling to attract talent due to inadequate compensation packages. As the demand for skilled professionals rises, offering competitive wages and comprehensive benefits becomes crucial in attracting and retaining top talent. If I had a Pound/Euro/Dollar for every time I heard a superintendent tell me: "That's what I was getting paid 12 years ago!" I would have about enough money to give them the additional 5-10% that they are looking for to meet their salary expectation. By investing in these areas and offering competitive compensation packages, ship managers and owners can better navigate the complexities of shore-based recruitment in the maritime industry. To address these challenges, proactive measures such as targeted recruitment strategies, talent development programs, and creating inclusive work environments are crucial. This isn't people being greedy, it's the sentiment in the market. The difficulties, as with all issues facing the Maritime industry, require proactive solutions. It's Not Rocket Science, It's Shipping. Do you agree?

Recruitment of seafarers is getting harder according to a survey of crew managers conducted by Danica Crewing Specialists. According to Danica, nearly half of those responding reported they are finding it more difficult to recruit crew of the calibre they need for their ships, while more than 70% of crew managers said their job has become more difficult within the past two years. https://bit.ly/3TRM5yn Via Safety 4 Sea

CREW RECRUITMENT: Recently as a personal favour, I helped an owner with an urgent "Stew/Deckhand" position. While I received impressive CV's, with great experience, qualifications, and references........ the reality was that the majority of candidates who went on for an interview or day trial were shockingly bad. Some couldn't even tie a knot, understand basic yachting terms, welcome guests properly, prepare basic canapés, or even make a coffee correctly. This raises the question, is this why crew retention is so bad, or do we need to question the training and qualifications process? It's worth noting that many of these candidates demanded upwards of 5k, some even 7k a month ++! What are your thoughts on this issue? #yachting #crewlife #recruitment #training #qualifications
