So it’s that time of year where is dust off my training gear and drive towards raising money for cancer research. Any donations would be gladly received as every little helps! The goal is to climb the height of Everest, which is 8,848m, on Snowdon, which means that I need to summit the tallest mountain in Wales at least 10 times over 3 days. I will need to cover the distance of a marathon each day, but uphill! Swim 5: 1,000m to get to 6.5km total. $2,264 raised personally with total fundraising @ 2.463m! Swim 4: 1,500m for a total of 5.5km. Swim 3: Quick after work swim. 1km for 4km total. A quarter through the month, a third through my target. $2,150 raised to date. Swim 2: 1,500m for 3km total. Hit the $2,000 mark - thankyou everyone for the support. Swim 1: 1,500m done! Close to $1,800 raised! Update: $1,500 raised thus far with the Starlight Foundation total sitting at just over AUD 1m. Amazing. Swimming starts tomorrow….. I very rarely do this on this platform - but it’s for a really important cause. I’m raising money in support of the Starlight Foundation who do amazing work in support of families with children affected by cancer. I’ll be racking up km in the pool and would greatly appreciate your support. Cheers.

Ménière’s is a chronic disease affecting the inner ear, causing ever-changing tinnitus, various degrees of hearing loss, and disabling vertigo episodes. It’s not curable (yet), and don’t bother investigating the causes, as you won’t get much. I'm fortunate enough to have stabilized it after a couple of years, even if that involves following an annoying no-salt diet, which doesn’t make me the easiest lunch or dinner guest. (Thank you all for your patience!) I've decided to challenge my 2023 record of 100km and complete a 120km swim from January to December 2024 to support the Meniere’s Society. I know it’s no Michael Phelps, but I can guarantee it takes a lot of consistency… The Meniere’s Society is the only registered charity in the UK dedicated solely to supporting people affected by dizziness and balance problems caused by vestibular disorders. They will use the funds to: - Support people affected by vestibular disorders. - Fund essential research projects into the cause, treatment, and management of these life-changing conditions.

Sometimes you need to jump in the deep end to learn swimming. If you have donors or potential donors who have high giving capacity but have not made big gifts to your nonprofit, don’t be shy! A strong case for support of your campaign, if described passionately in conversation with your donors, should go a long way to inspiring stretch giving. When is the best time to start a campaign? For every £1 raised for charity by skydiving, the NHS spends £14 on skydivers' injuries. Here's a bit of fun for a Wednesday morning, I first found this playing "Shot in the Dark" at Christmas (I'd recommend that game :) A 1999 analysis by Lee, Williams and Hadden at two sites found: - c. 1,570 charity parachutists - Total fundraising to charity c. £47,000 - 174 injuries (11%) - Average cost of £3,751 per casualty - Total cost of £650,000 to the NHS A bit of a giggle, and it seems parachuting is actually quite dangerous. But perhaps the more serious point here is how little money was raised. I suspect that's because the vast majority of donations went towards the cost of the skydive, leaving very little for the charities. This model is outdated but still very prevalent; asking friends for charity donations that cover the cost of you doing something fun. It's often more hidden these days, and not obvious how much is going to good causes vs the cost of the activity. Someone explained this problem to me with Channel relay swimming recently; if you're paying less than £500 for your swim, the charity is probably subsidising the difference. As a fundraiser, it's worth considering how much you're paying out of pocket, the true value of the activity, and the amount you're fundraising. It's not unusual for a small proportion of your fundraising to subsidise the activity cost, but I hope the industry is moving to something nearer 10% than 50%.

This time for the MDA, an organization that is crucial for those struggling with Neuromuscular Disease. A dream come true for the 2nd year in a row. That part is a dream.   I’m also running for my mother this year. That part is tough.   In early May of 2023, 5 weeks after arriving at Champlain Hudson, my mother was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). It’s known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking famously lived with ALS for several years. Pete Frates sparked the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge 10 years ago. Aside from these famous folks, this ALS killer targets around 20,000 new people per year. It’s 100% fatal and incurable. ALS sucks. Typical life expectancy for an ALS patient is 2-5 years once diagnosed. If you want to know more about how ALS operates, I asked AI to write a 200-word description on my fundraising page.   Since May, over the course of 10 months, a wonderful yogi, dancer, artist, all-around community star, mother, wife, and grandmother was systematically stripped of muscular function in a gruesome battle with ALS. My mother passed away on March 4th, 2024. She was a remarkable woman and it’s a privilege to run in her honor this year. Our family’s loss is still raw, but I have to get the word out fast, since I’ve just FIVE DAYS left to raise money. 🎯 **Challenge Accepted: Race for a Cause completed** Yesterday Sunday 18th August I challenged my self beyond my normal limits. I was participating in the H2H Duathlon near Hamburg, tackling a high paced 10k run. 🏃♂️ My mission was: To be much faster than at my relaxed pace for 10 km. That is 67 mins. My goal was to smash that time and complete it in 57 minutes or less. 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 "𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶" (𝗛𝟮𝗛) I posted last week to following suggestion: For every minute I shave off my 67-minute pace, I was asking you to contribute €10 to Help2Haiti. The intention of this post is to shine a light on young female athletes (like Lili in the video below) striving to play professional sport; but first, some context. I’m blessed with 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, all of whom have played sport, 3 at youth representative level (football, futsal, cricket), and one who played semi professionally in NZ’s top ⚽️ tier. I’ve coached girls and mixed teams, including a female U15 team to New Zealand Football's national futsal title. I’ve played competitive junior, youth and senior football, plus cricket, tennis, rugby, and Aussie Rules. I’m a fan of the Wellington Phoenix Football Club, Carlton Football Club, Warringah Rugby Club and along with all of that, I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. It’s heartwarming to see some of the players I’ve coached now playing for their National team and in professional ⚽️ environments. I’d like to think somewhere along the way I had a positive influence. So, as a father of 2 daughters, a coach of female players, and as a fan of all sports, how good is it to see young Lili in the video? Lili is a northern beaches local, a fan of Manly Warringah Sea Eagles - and now a representative rugby league 🏉 player, chasing her field of dreams with the club she has supported all her life. I understand the sacrifices young athletes like Lili and their families make to chase a dream. It takes time, money, love, and the expertise of good coaches to provide holistic support around young athletes - to grow them to be good people. Only a small percentage will play professionally, but with the right mindset, the young person will have grown through the experience, whatever their eventual career. Have you ever wanted to explore an ancient city, right in the Midwestern USA? Perhaps even a walled temple complex, in say, Wisconsin? Part of our social mission with our GiantLands is to raise awareness and monies for research and preservation of these ancients sites that are all over this great nation. There are more of these great, dare we say giant, earthworks in Wisconsin than anywhere else in the USA, and the world. One such site is called "Aztalan", a state park off I-94 between Madison & Milwaukee, northwest of Lake Geneva. You can find it also on the GL North American Adventure Map 1 in the 1E Boxed set. They were not built by giants, but by native Americans. There are two periods of human settlement we can now identify at Aztalan. The signage in the park is a great way to learn facts about how these wonderful sites were built and about the cultures that existed there. Friends of Aztalan State Park is raising funds to build a visitor center. A long time goal, almost accomplished, but we need some finishings funds. Our founder, Stephen E. Dinehart, is a lifetime member, & at times during the summer you can find him there guiding visitors in the exploration of our collective ancient heritage.
