An important quick read covering some key risks and opportunities for Australia and the region. Interesting call out that all but three of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories are aligned with the 'One China' policy. Thank you for sharing this paper Anntonette Dailey.

Very proud to present my (very first!) Policy Paper for the Australian Centre for Space Governance looking at national security issues in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories and how space capabilities can respond to those issues, whilst supporting the development of the Australian space industry. Evidence based, researched, peer reviewed - it provides an outline of opportunities and challenges. Completed for the ACSG policy series, in conjunction with the requirements of the ANU National Security College Master of National Security Policy with the support of Peter Kerr, SmartSat CRC, Dr. Danielle Ireland-Piper, Dr. Cassandra Steer. This was a labour of love and pain over five months, but I am very proud of the final outcome, even if the first pass received some challenging feedback - it just makes you stronger and more dogmatic in ensuring the final product is robust and fit for purpose. Will be presenting these outcomes in upcoming conferences including Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference and Exhibition, National Space Society of Australia Australian Space Research Conference, #APRSAF30. Have also presented outcomes on an individual level to Government agencies. I recommend you review all the papers as part of the series: https://lnkd.in/g8s8G_sG https://lnkd.in/gBnE795c Michael Di Francesco Caroline van Heuzen Brett Biddington AM PhD Roger Franzen Peter Moar

🚀 Strengthening Space Security Through Cooperation 🌍✨ At the European Space Conference, I joined a panel on Multilateral Space Security Governance—a reminder that space is a global commons and securing it requires international collaboration. 🔹Engaging Non-EU Spacefaring Nations – The OEWG on PAROS is a key step in bridging gaps, fostering dialogue, and advancing norms of responsible behaviour in order to keep space secure for all to use 🔹 The EU’s Role – We are committed to an inclusive, pragmatic approach, combining legal measures and behavioural norms to address growing security challenges. 🔹The Role of Industry – As suppliers and operators of critical space assets, commercial actors must be part of the conversation to shape effective and enforceable governance frameworks. 🌎 The Way Forward? Broaden global support for responsible space behavior—progress starts with shared understanding. The EU is ready to lead. #SpaceSecurity #EUSpace #OEWG #PAROS #ResponsibleSpace

The Australian Centre for Space Governance is excited to announce the release of a policy paper series that is the result of our workshop held in March 2024, “Securing Australia Through Space: What does Australia need to secure, and how can space help it do so?” We had over 15 experts from across the country deliver presentations and speak on roundtables at the workshop, which was attended by nearly 90 people, the vast majority of whom from across Defence and federal government. We are now proud to release eight policy papers, each of which covers one of the key issues that were discussed. Stay tuned over the coming months as we release these highly informed papers, which highlight the ways in which space-based technologies underpin Australia’s national security, and our national interest: Dr. Jia-Urnn Lee: Resilient PNT for Disaster Response Vinicius Guedes G. de Oliveira: The Importance of Cybersecurity Measures In Safeguarding The Australian Space Sector Anntonette Dailey: Securing the Pacific Region with Australia’s Space Capabilities Professor Melissa de Zwart and Michelle Neumann: Military Operations in Space – Australia’s Strategic Space Partnerships Dr. Stacey Henderson and Dr. Joel Lisk: Space Technology As Critical Infrastructure For Australia Stephen Ward and George Dyke: The Role Of Space Data In Securing Climate Information Art Cotterell: The Case for Mainstreaming Space Amy Hestermann-Crane: Space Sustainability As An Integral Support For Australia’s National Security #spacegovernance #spacelaw #spacepolicy ANU Institute for Space | InSpace Australian Space Agency ANU National Security College School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) ANU College of Asia & the Pacific Tech Policy Design Centre Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Australian Space Agency

About 80% of the attendees raised their hands when I asked how many of their companies are actively supplying to the space sector. I posed this question at the start of my talk yesterday at the Pacific Northwest Defense Coalition (PNDC)'s Space Supply Chain Opportunities Conference. The audience response marked a striking shift from just three years ago, when I asked the same question at this event. Back then, as I recall, about one-third of the attendees were supplying to space customers. This (anecdotally) highlights the significant growth of our local space ecosystem and its expanding supplier base. Kudos to Denise Ryser, Andrea Hegarty and the PDNC team for organizing another terrific supply chain conference. The program featured fascinating talks by Mike DeRosa (Gravitics Inc), Jeff Thornburg (Portal Space Systems), and Tiffany Le (Starfish Space). Each shared their innovative space company's compelling vision and emphasized how supplier partnerships are critical in meeting their ambitious goals. Ryan Peoples of Renaissance Strategic Advisors delivered some of the most insightful space sector analysis I've heard. It was a pleasure to see old friends and meet new folks, all of whom are contributing to humanity's future in space through their interest, involvement and initiatives. As I noted in my talk, the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Puget Sound region, is a global leader in the space and satellite sector. It's a great home base for suppliers looking to support this dynamic, growing industry. Washington State has lots of space! Buckle up. Let's go! If you’re interested in learning more about Washington's growing space and satellite sector, here’s a list of space companies and organizations in the state: https://lnkd.in/gFUzE8h. Last week, our Chair, Dr. Cassandra Steer, and Executive Director, Dr. Aleksandar Deejay, spoke at the Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference and Exhibition, discussing the central role of space technologies in the Asia-Pacific region. Aleks shared insights from his recent research in Tonga, where he engaged with government, industry, and civil society stakeholders to understand their communications and disaster response needs. His findings reflected the critical importance of access to space-based technologies for resilience and development. Cassandra highlighted how space-based capabilities can address shared challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, stating: "Australia has shared needs and priorities with its neighbours in the Asia-Pacific region that can be solved with space-based capabilities. From connectivity for remote, rural and regional communities, to climate data, water management, protecting fisheries, bushfire response, and security issues such as maritime domain awareness, and military intelligence - our local, national and regional interests are highly dependent on satellite capabilities. There is an opportunity to advance space technology cooperation across the region in support of these needs, and to do so as part of a policy lever for increased stability in the region." #spacegovernance #spacelaw #spacepolicy #spacesecurity ANU Institute for Space | InSpace Australian Space Agency ANU College of Asia & the Pacific Crawford School of Public Policy ANU National Security College School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) ANU Defence Institute ANU Pacific Institute Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Tech Policy Design Centre United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)

After answering the PPS' "State of Public Space Survey, I might as well share some of my answers: *"Placemaking is..." : the process of creating/enhancing a public space making it (more) user-friendly and meaningful to the community. * Over the course of your career, What has been the biggest change to the field of public spaces? : There has been shift in the focus on human scale, health, the importance of active frontages and the interaction with users making the public space more inclusive and memorable. * Fifty years from now, what role do you hope public spaces will play in our communities? : I envision public spaces as our shared outdoor living rooms, where people can thrive in harmony, inclusivity, and wellness.
