About us

The European Space Programme implements space activities in the fields of Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation, Connectivity, Space Situational Awareness/Space Traffic Management, Space Research and Innovation. It encourages and supports innovation and competitiveness through investments in critical infrastructures and disruptive technologies. The EU Space Programme is backing the European space industry and research by bringing together existing stakeholders and contributing to the emergence of a European ‘New Space’ eco-system. EU Space has several components, including: Copernicus Galileo EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) GOVSATCOM IRIS² Space Situational Awareness The EU Space Programme is implemented in close cooperation with the EU Member States, the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the European Space Agency (ESA), EUMETSAT and many other stakeholders.

  • Milestone reached: Commission adopts Decision selecting a space weather service 🌌 On 12 March 2025, the Commission adopted its Implementing Decision for the selection of a space weather service under the Space Weather Events (SWE) subcomponent of the EU Space Programme. This is the first of several milestones for the SWE subcomponent, an important initiative to keep assets in space and on Earth safe from adverse weather events in space. Space weather events are changes in the space environment caused by solar activity, including solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and variations in the solar wind and magnetic fields. Space weather risks in space include radiation storms that can harm satellite electronics and make them unusable, and geomagnetic storms that increase drag, affecting satellite paths and making it harder to manage and coordinate space traffic. Upcoming milestones for the SWE subcomponent include: ➡️ launch of a call for tender to procure EU space weather service  ➡️ contract award to the winning tenderer  ➡️ kick-off of provision of EU space weather service More information: https://lnkd.in/d8-CdGun The Implementation Decision: https://lnkd.in/dmVeufQE

  • The Galileo Search And Rescue service once again proved its life-saving efficiency this week! Last Tuesday, a group of French nationals led by a high-mountain guide got endangered in the Norwegian back country. They immediately activated their FastFind-RLS Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), signaling a need for help at 09.49.14. No less than 6 Galileo satellites reacted almost immediately – turning their SOS into the launch of a rescue operation in less than one minute! Speed was of the essence, as avalanches were spotted in the area, presenting an additional threat to the hikers. Vital information was exchanged between the French Mission Control Centre and the Norwegian Rescue service in Stavanger, thanks to the Galileo Ground Segment. Once more, international cooperation and coordination led to a successful rescue - in just one hour! The state-of-the-art technology of the Galileo/SAR service, combined with a good preparation of the hikers and the necessary registration of personal information in their beacon allowed the Norwegian Rescuers to react immediately. This is also a source of inspiration for the colleagues working on future developments of the Galileo Search And Rescue service. 📷 Credit image: Norsk Luftambulanse.

  • 🌍 Great progress towards Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for space-based services delivered to EU stakeholders! 🚀 The Technical Secretariat (TS) has been diligently refining modelling requirements for the following Life Cycle Stages: Distribution, Use and End of Life, covering 🔹 Modelling rules  🔹 Default data and datasets Next up, different Working Groups (WGs) under the TS —focusing on identified specific sub-categories (Earth Observation, Positioning Navigation and Timing, Satellite communication (video and connectivity services), In Space Transport, and Launch to Space—will convene between 27 March and 3 April 2025. Their mission? To build on TS recommendations and further define the modelling rules, the mandatory company-specific data, the default data and datasets, and critical data gaps. Collaboration with field experts is key to ensuring a robust and consistent approach for the development of the PEFCR for the space sector. Looking forward to the insights and outcomes from the upcoming WG meetings!
