Reflecting on the resignation of Claudine Gay, the first Black Harvard president, is a sobering reminder of the complex dynamics at play within higher education that expose major issues regarding education solely becoming a business instead of a place of academia. Her departure, stemming from tensions with pro-Israeli donors, underscores the challenges leaders face in navigating diverse perspectives and the influence of financial interests on institutional decisions. As individuals part of higher education, this situation prompts us to consider the broader implications of such conflicts, emphasizing the need to critically examine the intersection of institutional leadership, donor influence, and the pursuit of justice. It serves as a call for educators to advocate for an inclusive environment where principled leadership can flourish without compromising core values. So, Iona University, where is your voice? It would be more than wonderful to see Iona stand in solidarity with Palestine with tangible efforts. Very grateful for the anti-racism resources that were brought to my attention through the recent AFP Canada Leadership Retreat. My involvement with AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter has been a wellspring of resources for learning and growing both professionally and as member of my community. In particular, I have appreciated the opportunity to engage with materials that help me confront the ways in which I uphold systems of oppression. Particularly towards black and Indigenous people living in Canada. Here are some tools I'd like to share that are free: Black Canadians: History, Presence, and Anti-Racist Futures as well as Historical, Systemic and Intersectional Antiracism: From Awareness to Action https://lnkd.in/gkJNBC76 These tools are important to me because: 1. They do not require the BIPOC people in your life to answer questions that are emotionally laborious for them. 2. They allow you a space to reflect on the ways you can do better, or behaviours that you need to start/stop. 3. They equip you with the language and facts to support the feelings that are sometimes difficult or uncomfortable to articulate when having conversations about racism. How does Black History Month connect to U.S.-China relations? Throughout the history of interactions between the United States and China, Black and African-American figures played leading roles in the budding relationship between the two countries. This month, the National Committee is spotlighting how Black History helped shape U.S.-China relations and the world we live in today, from sports to culture to international politics. 1: George Braithwaite was instrumental in Ping Pong Diplomacy, connecting U.S. and Chinese citizens and leaders through sport. 2: Robert F. Williams befriended Chinese leaders and spoke out against racism before advising the U.S. government on China policy. 3: W.E.B. and Shirley Graham Du Bois were pivotal in promoting Afro-Asian solidarity, and in helping connect China with African nations. 4: Vicki Garvin taught African American history in Shanghai and continued her involvement with U.S.-China people-to-people relations even after leaving Asia. #BlackHistoryMonth #USChina #USChinaRelations #history

Lamin Deen - Sergeant in the British Army, serving 24 years in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Northern Ireland. As a professional athlete he competed in the 2014/2018 Olympic Games. Happy Black History Month! Every day this month, I will be celebrating black history milestones in tech. In honor of day 5 this month, the geopolitical nature of technology, and my former life as a Foreign Service Officer, I would like to highlight the incomparable work of former Secretary of State, Colin Powell (April 5, 1937 - October 18, 2021). Having already made history as the first black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Powell made history again when he became the first black Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. When Powell arrived at the U.S. Department of State in January 2001, he found an information-technology system predating the internet. Some departments were still using computers from Wang Laboratories, which went bankrupt in 1992. Under Powell’s leadership, the department replaced its outdated Wang computers with 44,251 Internet-capable computers with high-speed access. He further tried to send the message to the department to become "hardwired digital" and directed his team to update the Web site, particularly pages with country-by-country information, on a daily basis. At the time, they were updated every three months, to which he responded: "You don't understand. We no longer live in a lunar environment; we live in a transactional one." It’s difficult to imagine diplomacy without adequate computer systems … we have General Powell to thank for revolutionizing America’s digital diplomacy efforts. I know there are those like Nathaniel Fick who are doing everything in their power to help the Department of State keep up with a constantly evolving digital ecosystem.
