🚐 Breakout Learning Session: Bridging the Gap for the Unhoused 🏥 Today's session brought together experts Jason Larsen, Lisa Rose, Jessica Quintal Alvarez, and Anthony Vavasis, who shared invaluable insights on delivering "street medicine" to unhoused populations. 🌟 Key Highlights: 🔍 Understanding Challenges: We explored the unique barriers faced by individuals experiencing homelessness, from accessing traditional healthcare to navigating the complex landscape of health services. 🏥 Core Principles of Street Medicine: Emphasis was placed on patient-centered care and trust-building, showcasing how street medicine adapts to meet the needs of vulnerable communities on their own terms. 🚀 Logistics and Best Practices: Practical strategies for operating mobile medical clinics were discussed, including how to address critical health needs in real-time and foster sustainable impact in underserved areas. 🤝 Creating Impactful Programs: The session also covered methods to measure outcomes, such as reduced 911 calls and emergency department visits, and successful appointment scheduling, as well as forming effective partnerships to enhance outreach. But with the 2024 conference happening just in the aftermath of #HurricaneHelene, I have to ask: it seems weird that you have sessions like "Equity in Practice: Confronting Racial Bias in Medicine," all sorts of stuff about #artificialintelligence, the Silver Tsunami, "Reimagining Rural Health Equity Through Innovation," and "Dismantling Care Inequity: How Science & Innovation are Breaking Barriers to Accessibility." But I could not find one panel about #MobileMedicine #Ambulance #Fire #CommunityParamedicine #PublicSafety #DisasterResponse #CriticalCareTransport? ESPECIALLY when one considers that use of medical transportation skews dramatically toward the lower end of the socioeconomic and/or medically underserved spectrum. 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁 🏥 Right now, all one needs to do is look at who is lifting people out of the water and off of roofs, getting them to safety, reunifying them with loved ones, and ensuring that children and the elderly with special health needs are duly cared for. Their rigs tend to have light bars and sirens (but not always), but they don't have a single session at the conference. Can we change that in a hurry? Because their stories deserve to be told -- especially as the country is watching so much heroism play out in real-time. Mobile Medicine isn't magic but it IS #SafetyNetMedicine, and it is ITSELF sorely underrepresented.
