💬 Residents, community groups and businesses are being asked for their views on what should be included in a key part of #Stirling’s new Local Development Plan. Feedback is being sought to inform the Evidence Report. This provides the foundations of the new Local Development Plan by gathering data and information on issues such as housing, infrastructure and health needs. People are also being encouraged to have their say to help develop key areas such as housing, local living, and heritage. The new Local Development Plan will guide all future developments in the area so it will impact on everyone across Stirling. It covers things like building new homes, roads, schools, parks and other community facilities, to protecting our natural environment and supporting business space and sustainable economic growth. Big Questions: Leaning on the Official Community Plan Review Process At Monday’s Council meeting, I voted to uphold one of our fundamental Bylaws that does not allow subdivision without sewer. There is a lot to think about how and where we want to develop, what happens to land values, what do we want our neighbourhoods to look like, how do we encourage development where services already exist and avoid sprawl which is costly for the city and the environment, how do we improve how people move around? These are just a few of the big questions I have. I believe it makes sense to lean on the OCP Review process so we can talk about Langford as a whole. With all of Langford in the Urban Containment Boundary, unlimited height zones in the City Centre, need for climate action, transportation improvements, economic development etc. etc. I encourage everyone to participate in Let’s Chat Langford and the OCP Review Process. If you know any young people, encourage them to join in the conversation too – they are the most affected by the choices we make today. https://lnkd.in/gj8WaR-q

Everything you need to address falls under the umbrella of the ongoing debate and tension in small towns: balancing growth with preserving the community’s character. This week’s disputes with the Gladstone City Council (seeking that single residential homes development be approved, rather than large industrial developments) have brought to light 3 key issue which need to be considered when planning a development: 🏠 Council (and maybe some locals) want better amenities and infrastructure, but this often clashes with residents concerns about overdevelopment and the impact on the town’s identity. 🏠 Limited population and lower wages make it hard to deliver projects on time and attract new ventures, yet growth is necessary to create jobs, improve services, and improve the liveability of the area. 🏠 Preserving the town - from the quality of the land, waterways, flora, fauna to the aesthetics of the area. You need to ensure you hit all these issues when considering your development. Growth is inevitable and essential to bring better infrastructure, healthcare, and opportunities. While we put roots down here because of the peace and distance from all things town, the question remains how do we strike a balance? Is there a way to ensure progress while safeguarding this small town? A key to preserving our natural spaces, is getting our urban spaces right. This can mean different things in different environments, countries and cultures, who are solving for different "recipes" of issues. Not enough housing, land consumptive development aka sprawl, and how it impacts ecosystems and city infrastructure costs, development in or retreating from hazard areas, complete-community building. All sorts of things. Here's a toolkit that WSP in New Zealand colleagues have developed with a New Zealand (and Wellington) lens. #wearewsp Read more here: https://bit.ly/4f3DVLO
