This year, World Immunization Week celebrates 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) which was established by WHO member states at the World Health Assembly in 1974. I am proud to have contributed to this tremendous collaboration with colleagues and partners to conduct the most comprehensive modeling analysis of historical impact to date (stay tuned for publication on the Lancet). A few key highlights: 🌍 The global immunization efforts have saved an estimated 154 million lives, 6 lives every minute of every year, over the last 50 years. 🌎 Global infant mortality has declined substantially since 1974. Vaccination has accounted for 40% of that decline. 🌏 A child today is at least 40 percent more likely to survive to their next birthday than a hypothetical scenario of no vaccination. Increased survival probability is observed even well into late adulthood. Our task is not complete... until we have everyone, everywhere, at every age fully benefit from vaccines to improve their health and well-being! #HumanlyPossible #VaccinesWork #WorldImmunizationWeek

Since then, the impact of vaccines on child health around the world has been nothing short of miraculous. During the last 50 years, vaccines have saved an estimated 154 million lives—that’s six lives every minute—around the world. But the work isn’t finished yet. And today there are several challenges that threaten to set this progress back—from military conflicts and humanitarian crises to climate change. Still, the success of the last 50 years serves as a powerful reminder that vaccines are one of the best tools we have to protect people from preventable diseases. By continuing to invest in immunization, it’s #HumanlyPossible to achieve a healthier, more equitable future for all.
