PFAS?  Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, also referred to as "forever chemicals," are synthetic chemicals widespread in products like nonstick cookware, waterproof garments, firefighting foam, and cosmetics due to their resistance to oil, water, and grease. Their strong carbon-fluorine bonds make them resistant to breakdown, and their impact on the environment and health is a topic of ongoing research. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is examining a proposal related to this group of substances. Here's what's being considered: EPA's Current Review: The agency is considering a plan to list nine PFAS, including PFOA and PFOS, as hazardous for better management: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) Perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) Hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (GenX) Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) Potential Outcome: If approved, this would lead to improved monitoring and possible cleanup of these substances. It's important to note that they would not be immediately classified as hazardous wastes. Evaluating the Proposal: The EPA is assessing the direct financial implications of this proposal, with the aim of enhancing public health by more effectively managing these chemicals. Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are long-lasting synthetic chemicals widely used in a variety of sectors, including non-stick pans, fire-fighting foam, and other applications. The enduring presence of these compounds in the environment and possible health effects make them a unique water quality concern.  According to a study by the U.S. Geological Survey, 45% of the nation's tap water is estimated to have one or more types of #PFAS.
