Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the "gethoss"—a place where many people gather to smoke and find temporary solace in substances. As part of my work at Chosen Rehabilitation Centre, my colleagues and I went there not to judge, but to listen and offer a message of hope. It was a challenging environment, seeing so many individuals trapped in a cycle of addiction. At first, some people were hesitant to engage with us. But as we shared stories, listened without judgment, and spoke from a place of empathy, we began to build trust. One young man, in particular, stood out to me. He had been struggling for years, believing that change was out of his reach. But after hearing about our rehabilitation services and how we’ve helped others just like him, a spark of hope lit up in his eyes. We didn’t push—we simply offered him the possibility of a new path. Before we left, he promised to visit the center. The visit to the gethoss reminded me of the power of human connection. Sometimes, people need to know that someone cares enough to meet them where they are. Through compassion, listening, and showing them that help is available, we can make a difference—even in the darkest of places. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) is a survey that determines the amount of stressful and traumatic childhood experiences that can lead to physical and emotional health issues: https://lnkd.in/e3QBJbr And, women on average score higher than men. This is just one tool we use, and the outcome gives insight on the potential for someone to deal with addiction, alcoholism, IV usage, heart disease, and suicide attempts. The need for intervention nationwide is large. City Rescue Mission serves Jacksonville and surrounding populations in an effort to combat these issues and transform the lives of people from the inside out. We just published a new article: Racial and ethnic composition of peer recovery community members and barriers to acquiring funding for organizations in the ecosystem of recovery. Highlights of our study include: • Acquiring $$$ for substance use recovery programming is difficult. • Systemic disadvantages were found in the funding application process. • Orgs mainly serving BIPOC community have less diverse funding streams. • The racial + ethnic composition of orgs' community served matters.
