“A leader who takes care of their people, who stays focused on the wellbeing of the organisation can never fail “
(George J Flynn- US Marine Corp.)
With research showing an 85% burnout rate in schools, and the annual horrific Principal Occupational Health and Wellbeing rsesearch showing the personal health toll of leading a school, it’s little wonder the leadership pipeline is drying up.
No amount of frameworks, blueprints, online resources or EAP reviews will address this.
We must have a dual approach to creating effective and sustainable leadership practices.
The approach need to be “Systems and People”.
1) governments must invest to ensure the resources, policies, systems and tools serve school leaders to meet the needs of students.
That investment must include research evidenced programs that ensure effective and sustainable leadership practices.
2) school leaders must train/learn to implement and model effective and sustainable leadership practices to create a new professional culture that inspires aspirational leaders.
Either approach on their own results in sub-optimal teaching and leadership performance, and in turn denies students the opportunity achieve their potential.
Pat Murphy, AGPPA president, says the nation’s teacher shortage will soon give way to a school leadership shortage.
Is Australia’s school leadership pipeline in trouble?
