Silly question perhaps but what is the current figure for the amount of wildflower rich haymeadows lost since 1960 or 1970? Or name a date. UK or just England. It seems to be roughly the same figure we quote for this since 1985 - can that be true? Are we replacing more slowly than losing? Or are we replacing at a different rate? Where's the evidence to be found? Or do we just use the traditional old figure? Plantlife International National Trust

The results of the Old Vine Hero voting are announced on Monday, March 25, 10:00 AM PT. I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who took the time to vote, which I know required reading the profiles of all 16 worthy finalists. Make no mistake, old vines around the world are a vanishing breed. In Lodi alone, over 5,000 acres of vineyards over 50 years old have been pulled out just over the past 10 years. If anything, the pace is quickening. Many of the vineyard-designate old vine California bottlings you are enjoying today will no longer exist five or ten years from now. Your vote for The Old Vine Conference's Old Vine Hero slate, it is hoped, was a vote for slowing down this ominous trend, helping to keep many of these phenomenal plantings in the ground for future generations to savor their taste and historical, environmental and sustainable significance. It's good to know many of you have come to care as much about them as the families who have been heroically farming them all these years; for many eras at a time, thanklessly. Thanks again! Why do we prune vines in winter? ❄️ 🍇 Vines are pruned in winter for several important reasons. Here are some of the main reasons: 1. Dormant period: During winter, vines enter a period of dormancy, which means they are inactive in terms of growth. This makes pruning easier and less stressful for the vines. 2. Clear view of the structure: When the leaves have fallen during winter, it is easier for viticulturists to visualize the structure of the vine, including the branches, canes, and buds. This allows them to make informed choices during pruning to shape the vine according to their production goals. 3. Growth control: Winter pruning helps control the growth of the vine by removing some of its old wood. This promotes balanced and consistent growth in spring, making vine management easier throughout the growing season. To discover the real Burgundy, contact Youri Lebault 🍷
